The questions are all past MAT questions from 2007–2022 . The answers are collated below.
1. The centre is at (3 , 4) and one corner is at (1 , 5), which is a displacement of (−2 , 1) . There’s another corner opposite, at (3 , 4) − (−2 , 1) = (5 , 3), but this is not one of the options. To find the other corners, we need to find a vector with equal magnitude, but at right-angles to (−2 , 1) . Rotating by 90◦ gives (1 , 2) . The other corners are at (3 , 4) ± (1 , 2), which includes (2 , 2) . The answer is (2,2) .
2. Using the difference of two squares, this is Z01 e2x − x2 dx. Notice that, since the derivative of e2x is 2e2x, this integral is
􀀔 12e2x − x33􀀕 10 = e22 − 13 − 12 = 3e26−~~ ~~5
The answer is 3e2 − 5
6 .
3. Pair the terms to get −3 − 7 − · · · − 199. This is the sum of an arithmetic progression and is equal to (−3 − 199) × 50/2 = −5050
The answer is −5050.
4. Connect each point to the centre of the circle to split the shape into 12 isosceles triangles, each with angle 30◦ at the centre. Then the area of each triangle is ~~1~~2 × 1 × 1 × sin30◦ = ~~1~~4, and there are 12 triangles, for a total area of 3 .
The answer is 3 .
5. The integral is
Z0 a √x + x2 dx = Z0 a x 1/2 + x2 dx = 􀀔 23x3/2 + 13x3􀀕 a0 = 23a3/2 + 13a3 .
So we have 2a3/2 + a3 = 15 . This factorises as (a3/2 − 3)(a3/2 + 5) = 0 . Since a > 0 we want a3/2 > 0, so it’s 3, so a = 32/3 .
The answer is a = 32/3 .
6. The gradient at p is ep and so the tangent is y = ep (x − p) + ep. This crosses the x-axis when ep (a−p)+ep = 0 which happens if a = p−1 . Similarly q = 1−b so p−a = q−b (they’re both 1) .
a = p − 1 b = q − 1
The answer is p − a = q − b.
7. The intersection point is at ex = 1 − ex which happens when 2ex = 1, that is x = − ln2 < 0.
The area has reflectional symmetry in the line y = ~~1~~2 so we want
2 Z−0ln 2 ex − 12 dx = 2 hex − x2iln 2 = 2 􀀒 (1) − 􀀒 12 + ln22 􀀓􀀓 = 1 − ln2 The answer is 1 − ln2 .
8. Either x ≥ 0 and x2 + 1 = 3x or x < 0 and −x2 + 1 = −3x. The first equation has solutions
~~1~~2 􀀀3 ±√5􀀁 which are both positive. The second equation has solutions ~~1~~2 􀀀3 ±√13􀀁 and only one of these is actually negative. So there are three solutions in total.
The answer is 3 .
9. The relationship between circle Cn of radius rn and circle Cn+1 of radius rn+1 is shown below.
The tangent is at right-angles to the radius, so there’s a right-angled triangle with hypotenuse rn+1 and other sides rn and 1 . Pythagoras gives r2n+1 = r2n + 1 . Since r 21 = 1, we have r22 = 2 and r23 = 3 and so on, up to r 2100 = 100, so the radius of C100 is 10 .
The answer is 10 .
10. Complete the square for x and for y (x − 2k)2 − 4k2 + (y − 2)2 − 4 + 8 = k 3 − k This is the equation of a circle with centre (2k, 2) and r 2 = k 3 + 4k2 − k − 4 provided that expression is positive. Factorising the cubic as (k + 4)(k − 1)(k + 1) reveals that this happens if and only if either −4 < k < −1 or if k > 1.
The answer is “if and only if either −4 < k < −1 or k > 1”.
11. 3cos2 x + 2sin x + 1 = 3(1 − sin2 x) + 2sin x + 1 = −3(sin x − 1/3)2 + 1/3 + 4 . This takes its maximum value when sin x = 1/3, and that value is 4 + 1/3 = 13/3.
The answer is 13 .
12. The tangent is y = 2ax − a2 , which crosses the x-axis at (a/2 , 0) .
The area is Z0 a x2 dx − (area of APQ) where A is (a, a2 ), P is (a, 0) and Q is (a/2 , 0) . This is a3 a3 a3
~~ ~~ − ~~ ~~ = ~~ ~~
3 4 12
The answer is a3
12 .
13. Factorise the numbers from 1 to 10; this gives
log 10 (2 × 5 × 32 × 23 × 7 × 2 × 3 × 5 × 22 × 3 × 2) = log 10 (283452 7) .
Use log 10 (2252 ) = 2 . Use 2434 = 64 . This gives 2+log 10 (2264 7) = 2+2log 10 2+4log 10 6+log 10 7. The answer is 2 + 2log 10 2 + 4log 10 6 + log 10 7.
14. The turning points have dydx = 0 at x = 1 and at x = 3, so 3 + 2a + b = 0 and 27 + 6a + b = 0 . Solve these for a = −6, b = 9 .
