The introduction emphasizes that efficient production depends on skilled operators and well-equipped plants, and it explains how duct work relates to reading architectural plans, tracing duct routes, and interpreting the locations of furnaces, blowers, steam pipes, coils, registers, ventilators, and smoke flues. XVIII. \nCoNSTRUCTION OF A LARGE VENTILATOR-179 \n# INTRODUCTORY\n\nThe modern demand for economy and efficiency inmethods of production have given a strong impetusto specialization in the various branches of sheetmetal work.In the larger cities are found very manyshops that contract exclusively for heating and venti-lating,exhaust pipes and ducts, etc.Only the wellequipped,well-manned plant and only the skillful op-erator thoroughly familiar with his special calling, canreadily take advantage of the opportunities presentedin this large field. \nMany excellent books have been prepared for theguidance of operators in various distinct branches ofsheet metal work but none has heretofore been de-signed to cover the subject of heating and ventilatingduct construction. The plan of the present work isto take up each operation, and by means of descrip-tions,with in nearly all cases accompanying illustra-tions,to show all operations incident to the construc-tion and erection of heating and ventilating ducts. The reader may thus be equipped with a completeseries of practical methods, available almost at aglance. \nThe material has been compiled from the columnsof SHEET METAL where is was presented serially, with the definite purpose of its subsequent publica-tion in book form. The illustrations, mainly fromcarefully made pen and ink drawings, are a specialfeature. \nIt should be stated that the operator whose busi-ness it becomes to install heating and ventilatingpipes should thoroughly understand reading archi-tectural plans such as are used in building construc-tion;that is,he should be familiar with the methodsby which the various means used in heating andventilation are indicated upon plans, elevations andsections,as the furnaces, blowers, steam pipes andcoils, air ducts, registers, ventilators, smoke fues, etc.,as well as with the usual locations of the same,so that he may trace the courses of ducts and pipesfrom basement up through the several floors,locat-ing bends, risers, junctions, etc. He should alsounderstand the methods of calculating capacities ofducts and amount of heating surface of pipes andcoils and the requirements of the same,as well asareas of wall and glass surfaces with reference tothe heat units required. It may be said that thebest way of learning how to read plans is to
