chainof artillery forts built along the Channel coast to counter a feared invasion byFrance and Spain.Sandsfoot Castle suffered from cliff erosion soon after itwas built and fell into ruin during the seventeenth century, but PortlandCastle remained armed and garrisoned for nearly 250 years, and is stillremarkably well preserved. The castle changed hands several times during \nthe Civil War.It was maintained fitfully during the \neighteenth and nineteenth centuries until themenace of invasion by Napoleon Buonapartehad passed. In the early nineteenth century,it was converted into a private house by theManning family and some of the rooms wereadapted for domestic use. However, with thedevelopment of the neighbouring Royal Navybase in the latter part of the nineteenth century, the castle returned to active service and remainedin use until after the Second World War. \nCONTENTS \n3 TOUR OF THE CASTLE4 Courtyard5 Entrance5 Great Hall \n6 Gunners'Quarters/Store7 Gun Room9 Kitchen10 Upper Hall point. The castle is shapedlike a segment of a circle, with a two-storey circular tower or keep at itscentre and rectangular wings radiatingfrom either side. The main gunbatteries were on two levels in thecurved front towards the sea.A thirdtier of guns could be mounted ontop of the central tower and its wings. This squat but powerful Tudor fortwas equipped with the most up-to-date weapons, and could cross its firewith Sandsfoot Castle under twomiles(about three kilometres)awayon the other side of the bay. From anearly date there was a moated andwalled enclosure to the south of thecastle. The castle has changed verylittle externally over the past four anda half centuries, apart from theenlargement of the original gun loopsand windows in the early nineteenthcentury, when it was converted to aprivate house. When the castle was \nregistered as a historic monument in1955,a decision was taken to showthe interior as far as possible in itsTudor form. This meant strippingout the remaining nineteenth-andtwentieth-century adaptations so that \nBelow:Aerial view of thecastle, showing its unusualshape \nOpposite:Fragments ofpainted lettering fromPortland Castle \nnow there is little to
