As per Board Meeting 77, a member-based and sub-chamber-balanced working group was established to develop the Policy to Address Conversion. Version 1-0 of the policy was drafted by this working group between August 2018 and December 2020 and subsequently finalized by the FSC Secretariat based on further membership input. |\n\n® 2023 Forest Stewardship Council, A.C. Throughout the years, inconsistencies have emerged between the different documents and definitions, impeding the original intention to halt conversion by certifying responsible forest management. \nGrowing consumption of natural resources has posed an increasing pressure to convert the last remaining natural forests and High Conservation Values (HCVs) areas to other land uses in the past decades. At the same time, there has also been an increasing awareness to promote restoration of degraded ecosystems for fighting climate change and for avoiding the loss of biological diversity. \nThis policy was developed by a sub-chamber balanced working group, established by the request of FSC membership in the General Assembly 2017 (Motion 7) to: \n1. Review and define FSC’s position on conversion, \n2. Strengthen FSC’s role to support global conversion-free commitments, \n3. Provide a pathway for forest areas converted from 1 December 1994 to enter the FSC system, and \n4. Accelerate further conservation , ecological restoration and social restitution. \nCONTENTS \nIntroduction 3 \nObjective 5 \nScope 5 \nReferences 6 \nTerms and Definitions 7 \nAbbreviations 12 \nPolicy Elements 13 \nOBJECTIVE \nThe Policy to Address Conversion presents FSC’s general position and fundamental principles on conversion of natural forests and High Conservation Value areas. \nThe purpose of this policy is to: \n1) Provide a framework for FSC to develop or join partnerships and alliances towards the goal of halting deforestation and conversion and promoting conservation, restoration and restitution; \n2) Further elevate FSC as the preferred tool for responsible forest management to deliver economic, social and environmental viability; \n3) Inspire FSC membership, certif","cbCaiv6gHDx8ZEm0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiv6gHDx8ZEm0","pdf",600728,17,"English","# Introduction\n## Objective\n## Scope\n# References\n## Terms and Definitions\n## Abbreviations\n## Policy Elements","[{\"question\":\"What does the Policy to Address Conversion cover?\",\"answer\":\"It addresses conversion of natural forests and High Conservation Value areas, defining a holistic policy framework for remediation of environmental harms and restitution of social harms within the stated period.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the key cut-off date for the new conversion definition?\",\"answer\":\"The policy introduces a new comprehensive definition of conversion applicable to conversion activities occurring after 31 December 2020.\"},{\"question\":\"What conversions are not covered by this policy?\",\"answer\":\"It does not apply to conversions prior to 1 December 1994, lasting changes to HCV areas prior to 31 December 2020, and certain conversion activities before 31 December 2020 on management units acquired by organizations not involved, subject to FSC certification conditions.\"}]","Policy to Address Conversion - Policy Elements - Version 1-0 | PDF",1791010343,43]
