given letters of protec-tion from being disturbed. But when the final Act forGeneral Suppression was passed, these were null.Theannual value of the house was πo exclusive of feesreceived for the ModwennaEdith took the veil, and her father founded and endowedPolesworth Abbey for her, where she became first Ab-bess.This is all confused and wrong, say later authorities.Edith lived in the tenth century(in 980)and Modwennain the seventh.More likely(though not certainly true)isthe story that makes Edith the sister of King Athelstanand daughter of Edward the Elder, given in marriage byher brother to Sitric, the heathen Danish king of Nor-thumbria,who was to become a Christian. He did not;herepudiated his bride, and she took the veil.In any case,St.Edith of Polesworth must not be confused with St.Edithof Wilton, her contemporary. \nThe gate house and the church are the chiefremains of Polesworth Abbey. The former is a pictur-esque building, stone below and timber above, withsome remaining in England, and this is \nof the twelfth century. She has her crosier and book, and her feet rest on a stag. \nThere are other good tombs-one,of Isabel Cock-ayne (1447),in particular-and the
