Seven years later Sufia, holding her ma’s hand, arrived in Kolkata to meet the great Rokeya Sakhawat Hossain, the teacher and writer who was working for rights and education for girls. This meeting inspired Sufia Kamal to become a Supergirl.  \nSufia was raised in a traditional way, in a part of the house where only girls were allowed. She could not study much, but her mother secretly gave her Bengali lessons. When Sufia was married at the age of 12 she continued to read and write, her husband was studying to be a lawyer in Kolkata and together they talked and shared ideas. Sufia was very good with words, and her first story was printed in the newspaper when she was 13.  \nWhen she was just 23, Sufia became a widow, left alone with a daughter in the big capital city. She refused to go back to her parents’home, deciding to stay in Kolkata and work as a teacher and writer. In life and in writing, Sufia was gentle but radical. The great poet Rabindranath Tagore called her the North Star, because she was like a guiding light for many.  \nBegum Sufia Kamal lived through many difficult times—the Bengal famine of  \n1943, the fall of the British Raj in 1947, the Language Movement in 1952 and the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971. Throughout it all she put the needs of others before her own, she was a great community leader. At one point she took off her veil, and moved about freely.  \nSufia Kamal led a long and exciting life, she was a poet and an activist. Never wasting a minute, she kept working to make the world a better place not just for girls and women, but for everyone. She remarried and had wonderful children that continue to do her good work till this day.
