POEMS IN PRAISE\n\nBy Virginia Wuerfel Slayton \n# 2\n\nPoems in Praise of Life \nBy VIRGINIA WUERFEL SLAYTON \nFEAR and heartbreak, love and joy,seri-ous meditation and rapturous ecstasy, sprinkled here and there with whimsy—these are the experiences which precededthe making of Mrs.Slayton's poems. The tools she has used to fashion theseelemental motifs into their prosodicsynonyms are the traditional tools of thepoet's trade—imagery, metaphor andpersonification: \nMy love is like a tender bud, \nNewborn and tightly curled.Your presence is the sun and rain \nThat finds that bud unfurled. \nHer molds are also traditional forms—quatrain, couplet, lyric, sonnet. But theend result is poetry that sparkles withnewness and glows with the eternal radi-ance of joyful living. \nWhen I am dead, don't sing my praise,Or say I walked in pious ways.Just say that I was wild and free,And danced and played upon the lea. \nThe poet's basic love of life is perhapslargely possible because she is able toface and express unhappiness so conclu-sively and vividly, thereby getting thebetter of it,as these lines on “Fear.” \nDcep,deepI feel it creep,Nauseous leach!Acrawling thingSuk5ukMy
