1‘Freak of Nature'\n\nJeffrey Hudson was born very small.Hewas born almost 400 years ago on 14th June1619.Jeffrey didn't grow like other  \nchildren.The years passed,but Jeffrey onlygrew to 18 inches high.That's 45 cm,justover two times as high as this book.Jeffreywas born into a poor family who lived in aone-room home in a small town called  \n工  \nOakham.But Jeffrey's life at home with hisfamily didn't last long.  \nJeffrey's father was a butcher called JohnHudson.He had a new and importantcustomer-the Duke of Buckingham.TheDuke was a great friend of the King.Hehad moved into a very grand house justoutside Oakham.That house was calledBurley On The Hill and it had its own park.  \nJohn Hudson sold meat to the cook atthe house.He also organised bull-baitingfor the Duke when he wanted to entertainhis visitors.Bull-baiting was a horriblesport where a bull was tied up and dogs  \nwere let loose to attack the bull.People beton which would die first-the bull or one ofthe dogs.John Hudson sold the bulls to theDuke.  \nPeople did other strange things for fun.They seemed to enjoy seeing anything that  \nthey could call a'freak of nature'.We knowof fairs where there were tents with 'freaks'on show.There was one with a calf withfive legs and another with a woman with abeard.A big London fair showed a dwarfkept in a parrot cage.It's likely that littleJeffrey was shown at local fairs or at inns.He would have stood on a table to be  \nlaughed at,and perhaps danced a little andpeople gave him a few pennies.  \nHow else was a boy who was only 45 cmhigh going to make a living?Most poorchildren would have been working in thefields or helping their parents with work.Jeffrey was too small for that.  \nHis family must have thought that  \nJeffrey would spend his life going round thecountry as one of those 'freaks'.But  \nJeffrey was lucky.Grand people liked thosethings too,and Jeffrey was about to be seenby the grandest people of all.  \nThe Duke's wife got to hear about  \nJeffrey.Maybe she saw him one day withhis father,bringing the meat to the Duke'skitchen?Perhaps she heard gossip abouthim or saw him at a fair.It was a fashionfor rich people to have dwarfs working forthem at that time.The Duke's wife wantedJeffrey to come and live at Burley OnThe Hill.  \nSo,aged just six or seven,Jeffrey lefthome to go and live with the Duke.Jeffreywent from wearing poor rough clothes towearing clothes made of bright silk andvelvet and lace.He went from eatingcheese,bread and porridge to eating thefinest foods and drinking wine.He hadservants to look after him.Was he pleasedto have become so much richer than hisfamily were?Or was he upset to have beensent away from them?We don't know.ButJeffrey was soon going to be sent evenfurther away and to
