Through an interdisciplinary lens, the issue explores healthcare as a mosaic of stories, identities, emotions, memories, and meaning—resisting reduction of patients and clinicians into single labels or simplified clinical summaries. The journal frames fragmentation as a source of light and invites ongoing revision of understanding. Contributions span poetry, painting, stories, and photography.","UC Irvine \nPlexus \nTitle \nPlexus 2026: Mosaic \nPermalink \n[https://escholarship.org/uc/item/9p6838tf](https://escholarship.org/uc/item/9p6838tf) \nJournal \nPlexus, 2026 \nAuthors \nYang, Celina \nGandhi, Rhea Nguyen, Huanet al. \nPublication Date \n2026-07-24 \nCopyright Information \nThis work is made available under the terms of a Creative Commons Attribution License, available at [https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nPeer reviewed \n[eScholarship.org](eScholarship.org) Powered by the California Digital Library \nUniversity of California \nMOSAIC \nPLEXUS 2026 \nWelcome to the 27th issue of PLEXUS, UC Irvine School of Medicine's Journal of Medical Humanities & Arts PLEXUS is an annual, medical-student-organized \nublication that proudly showcases the vast talents, diverse perspectives, and nuanced experiences of the greater UCI Health community through art. It is our mission to spark introspection, catalyze meaningful discussions, and ultimately apply the tenets of medical humanities to foster a cohort of compassionate ealers \nThis year, we present to you MOSAIC. Every person embodies an amalgamation of stories, identities, and lived experiences which shape their perspective onealth and healing. Like the tessellated fragments of a mosaic, no single piece \ntells the whole story — and yet, each is irreplaceable The practice of medicine enefits from looking at each situation through an interdisciplinary lens, \nconsidering the different facets of patients' lives, and thinking carefully about hat defines their vision of well-being While a mosaic may traditionally only beerce ived as a whole, each piece is integral to creating a story — one that is \ntextured by emotions, memories, and meaning. Medicine extends beyond the science of diagnosing and treating; it encompasses the art of listening, connecting, and weaving together the fragments of our humanity into a collaborative understanding of health. We sought to explore the mosaics that shape our journeys in healthcare — as students, physicians, and patients — and toonor the pieces, however small or fractured, that hold everything together. \nTo look at a mosaic is to resist the impulse toward reduction — to resist the idea that a patient is a diagnosis, that a physician is a role, that a story can be collapsed into a chart note Each fragment carries its own color, weight, and istory. Arranged together, they produce something that no single piece could ave predicted \nAnd yet, a mosaic is never truly finished New hands place new pieces; old pieces can shift or be reinterpreted in a new light. It is a form that invites revision and resists the illusion of a fixed and final meaning If there is resistance to be o und in this concept, mosaic, it is in the insistence that fragmentation is failure —instead, these cracks are not flaws to be concealed, but the very lines along which light enters and meaning is made . \nThe works in this journal display a similar refusal of an easy resolution. They ask: what does it mean to be seen, partially and imperfectly, by another? What is lost when we smooth over the edges of a person's story for the sake of clinical efficiency? What is found when we dare to sit with the complexity, the contradiction, and the color of a life? Each contribution — whether poem, ainting, story, or photography — is itself a tile: irreducible, essential, and radiant in its particularity. \nWe sincerely thank our advisors Dr Juliet McMullin and Dr. Tan Nguyen for their uidance, and the UCISOM Medical Humanities & Arts Program and Department ofamily Medicine for their continued support. \nay what lives between these pages settle something in you, stir something within ou, and remind you why this work matters \n— \nelina Yang & Rhea Gandhi \nEditors-in-Chief \nFRONT COVER and BACKGROUND: \nIn Health and In Media \nMadison Palarca-Wong, MS2 \nDr. Juliet McMullin \nFaculty Advisor \nDr. Tan Nguyen \nFaculty Ad","cbCaiiH0UrJLYJcB","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaiiH0UrJLYJcB","pdf",6624478,6,1,49,"English","en",105,"# Welcome\n## MOSAIC\n## Editors and Contributors","[{\"question\":\"What is the purpose of Plexus 2026: Mosaic?\",\"answer\":\"It showcases the talents and perspectives of the UCI Health community through art and writing, applying medical humanities to spark introspection and meaningful discussion.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the journal connect mosaics to healthcare?\",\"answer\":\"It treats each piece—stories, emotions, memories, and lived experiences—as an essential tile, emphasizing listening and collaboration rather than reduction to diagnoses or roles.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of contributions are included in this issue?\",\"answer\":\"The issue features works such as poems, paintings, stories, and photography, each presented as a unique, irreducible “tile” within the broader mosaic.\"}]","Plexus 2026 -
