\n-Will there be a new procedure for requi-sitioning blood from the blood bank? \n-Will head nurses be replaced by unitmanagers? \n-Will the methods for storing X-rayschange? \nSuch changes may be a boon for depart-mental efficiency, but they may bomb withsubordinates. Most workers tend to resistchange -despite its potential benefits.Partic-ularly when it means an abrupt disturbance inlong-established work patterns, change mayproduce turmoil and tension. \nBut change doesn't have to scare subordi-nates.Much of the so-called resistance tochange is really resistance to unexpected de-mands made without warning or preparation.Resistance is usually a sure indicator that thehealth-care supervisor has failed to plan ahead. \n## Get a head start\n\nGetting a head start on change can pay offfor you in several ways:It makes crash pro-grams-with their inevitable pressure on hos-pital workers -unnecessary.It gives youplenty of time to sit down and work out de-tails before the heat's on.You'll be able toanticipate problems and think of ways tohandle them-because unpleasant last-minutesurprises are kept to a minimum.Of course, \nVolume 7,Number 19 \nOctober 7,1974 \nHOSPITAL SUPERVISION \nyou'll run into emergencies-but you'll be ina better position to improvise if your basicpreparation is sound. \nPerhaps the biggest advantage of planningfor change is the time it gives workers to getready. Not only does it give them time to ac-cept it,but it gives you time to prepare them-through training, transfers, and other ad-justments. \nIf changes are coming up in your depart-ment,here are several ways in which you canplan ahead: \n## Get the facts\n\nYou must,of course, keep workers in-formed about any changes that affect them.To do this, you must keep yourself informed. If you have a problem communicating withsubordinates, doctors, administrators,or co-workers-and if you don't have the completefacts on a change in the making-make ityour business to go after the facts. \nYou may get your first inkling of a changefrom a brief reference to it made at a meetingor in a report. That's your cue to go afteravailable details. \nFind out exactly how the change will af-fect your department so you can start makingplans.Find out the target date for completingthe change so you can work out a schedule-and find out what other departments are in-volved so you can co-ordinate your plans with \ntheirs.Make sure, too,to find out the reasonsfor the change so you can explain them tosubordinates. \nGer the over-all picture \nOnce you've got the facts on impendingchanges for your department, look at thesechanges as part of an overall pattern.Sincechanges can't be kept in water-tight compart-ments,they may create problems -or maysolve problems -throughout the departmentor hospital. \nYou can best see the pattern of depart-mental changes by setting up a chart.Incolumns across the top of the chart, list all thechanges you foresee for your department inthe year ahead.List all present workers downthe left-hand side.Which people will be af-fected by each change? How will they be af-fected?What kinds of action can you take toprepare them for the change? When shouldthese actions be scheduled? \nLeave room for new workers you may haveto hire in order to meet the demands of a newmethod, procedure,or schedule. \nWhen you look at your chart in terms ofthe kinds of actions you must take to prepareeach worker for change, consider these activi-ties: \n·Training.Many changes call for trainingat least some subordinates -particularlywhen a change involves new equipment,pro-cedures,or responsibilities \nRetraining workers in new procedures pre-sents special problems.Have you ever tried togive up a strong habit-like smoking, forexample?Just when you thought you had itlicked, did you find yourself slipping back? This is exactly the problem with retraining:Because your subordinates may have devel-oped semi","cbCaijVT41h64NQZ","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaijVT41h64NQZ","pdf",1689740,"English","# Planning for Change, Part 1: Get a Head Start\n## Get a head start\n## Get the facts\n## Get the over-all picture\n## Training\n## Adjustments and transfers","[{\"question\":\"Why do most workers resist change in health-care departments?\",\"answer\":\"Resistance often comes from abrupt disruption of established work patterns and from unexpected demands introduced without warning or preparation.\"},{\"question\":\"How can supervisors benefit from getting a head start on change?\",\"answer\":\"Early planning avoids unnecessary crash programs, creates time to work out details, helps anticipate problems, and allows better improvisation during emergencies.\"},{\"question\":\"What key information should supervisors gather before implementing departmental changes?\",\"answer\":\"They should determine how the change affects the department, identify the target completion date, identify involved departments for coordination, and learn the reasons so they can explain them to subordinates.\"}]","Planning for Change - Part 1 - Get a Head Start | PDF",1790598705,18]
