hymn tunes typically and conveniently exploited only two mainkinds of metre, triple and quadruple. The exceptions to this time-honoured three or four beat pattern are few and far between, sothat in spite of the wealth of melodies and the available choice ofkeys there is always a possibility that a powerfully metrical melodymay detract in some way from the verses it has been called upon tosupport.Plainsong hymn tunes and sequences, generally free fromtime-signatures and their attendant pulses, allow natural speech-rhythm to prevail and in addition present age-old melody un-trammelled by metre. The riches to be discovered are limited onlyby the necessarily selective nature of modern hymn-books. \n# TEXT AND METRE\n\nCHRISTIAN HYMNS were not always welcomed into the bosom ofthe Church with the fervour and alacrity that characterized theorganization of liturgies in the early Middle Ages.Often they weresuspect because of their popular appeal, and attempts were madefrom time to time to suppress hymn-singing altogether.Yet theEastern Church and Spain encouraged the composition and singingof hymns,so that style, poetry, and perhaps even melodies filteredthrough to central Europe, penetrating at last the barriers ofconservative Rome, where hymns had been excluded from theliturgy for eight hundred years or more after the founding ofChristianity.A Frenchman,Hilary of Poitiers, brought back hymnsfrom the east and began to write some of his own by the middle ofthe fourth century.Ambrose,Bishop of Milan,Aurelius Prudentius,Venantius Fortunatus,Paul the Deacon, and many of theirfollowers in the paths of pious poetry helped to bring Latin hymnodyto new peaks of inspiration and excellence. One of the main reasonsfor their success was the very simplicity of their verse-form:fouriambic feet to a line, and four lines to a stanza. This principalcharacteristic can be seen in countless
