It is a non-commercial work which allows adaptation and addition, provided the copyright and credits are retained. The development of the book was made possible by a grant from the Canadian Embassy in Indonesia. The story is written by Eddy Supangkat, B.Sc., and Dr. Joost J.J. Pikkert, with illustrations by Slamet Prayitno. The narrative follows Pithi, a young rat, and his mother's warnings about a cat named Meong. Meong, wary of the mother rat, waits for an opportunity to catch Pithi alone. One day, Pithi strays far from home and gets lost. Meong, spotting the opportunity, approaches Pithi with the intent to pounce. However, Pithi, upon realizing the danger, cleverly feigns a lack of fear and pretends to be sad about his mother's cruelty, which he claims makes him wish for death. When Meong expresses his intent to eat him, Pithi asks for a final request: to sing songs for Meong's enjoyment before he dies. This sets up a potential narrative where Pithi's cunning might be used to escape the dangerous situation.","Pithi the Cunning Mouse \nEnglish Story Book \nCopyright © 1991, LPM and SIL International \nYou may not use this work for commercial purposes. Dr. Joost J.J. Pikkert \nIllustrated by: Slamet Prayitno \nEnglish \nThere once was a mother rat who had a small child named Pithi. Pithi’s mother always warned Pithi to watch out for Meong, the cat that lived near their home. \nIn fact, Meong really wished he could eat Pithi but he was not brave enough to face Pithi’smother. So he waited for a good opportunity to catch him away from where he lived. \nOne day Pithi played a long way from his home. When he started to go home he lost his way and couldn’t find the right path. \nMeong the cat quickly saw that Pithi was lost and quietly moved up to leap on him. Fortunately Pithi saw Meong, giving himself time to think of a way to save himself. \n“Hello Meong. You like to eat rats don’t you?”asked Pithi to Meong as if he was not afraid. \n“Yes, and you will taste very delicious!”replied Meong. \n“Today I purposely came here to hand myself over to you. My mother has been very cruel tome so that I thought I would be better off dead,” lied Pithi while pretending to be sad. \n“In that case, I will pounce on you.” \n“Patience Meong, I want to ask one thing of you before I die.” \n“What is your request?” asked Meong. \n“I want to sing several songs for your enjoyment.
