It can be used in a sense of surprise,“Whoa! Geta load of that!”which today makes it more of a “Check it out” or “Noway!” or “Get off!” \nAye! - “Why yes, I agree most heartily with everything you just said or did.”Aye aye! - “I’ll get right on that sir, as soon as my break is over.” \nArrr! - This one is often confused with arrrgh, which is of course the sound you make when you sit on a belaying pin.“Arrr!” can mean, variously,“yes,” “Iagree,” “I’m happy,” “I’m enjoying this beer,” “My team is going to win it all,” “I saw that television show, it sucked!” and “That was a clever remark you or I just made.” And those are just a few of the myriad possibilities of Arrr! \nTips and Tricks for Talking Like a Pirate \n1. Use the Accent \nA big part o’ talkin’ like a pirate is usin’ the right accent. Pirates speak with a distinctive, exaggerated accent that sounds a bit like a mix of West Country English and American Southern. Drop yer Gs at the end o’ words and stretch out yer vowels. For example,“sailin’” becomes “sailin’,” and “gold” becomes “gooold.” \n2. Replace “You” with “Ye” \nPirates rarely say “you.” Instead, they use “ye” or “yer.” So, instead ofsayin’ “Are you ready?”ye’d say “Are ye ready?” \n3. Add Extra Rs \nPirates love their Rs. Add an extra “r” to words where it makes sense, like “arrrgh” for“argue” or “shiverrrr” for “shiver.” \n4. Use Nautical Terms \nPepper yer speech with nautical terms. Talk about the “poop deck”(the back \npart of the ship), the “crow’s nest”(a lookout point high up on the ship), and the “brig”(the ship’s jail) . \n© Night [of Mystery Inc. -www.nightofmystery.com](of Mystery Inc. -www.nightofmystery.com) \n5. Speak in Short Sentences \nPirates tend to speak in short, punchy sentences. Keep it simple and direct. Instead ofsayin’ “I think we should go over there,” say “Let’s go thar.” \nAdvanced Pirate Lingo \nOnce you’ve mastered the basics (see above), here is a glossary to help build your pirate vocabulary and fit in at The Salty Sea Dog. \nA \naft- At, in, toward, or close to the stern ofa ship. \nahoy- An interjection used to hail a ship or a person or to attract attention. To get along broadside a ship was to take it at a very vulnerable angle. This is of course, the largest dimension of a ship and is easiest to attack with larger arms.
