China is by far the largest producer of pork products, closely followed by other Asian countries, then both North and South America, followed by Europe. The number of pig farmers in Africa is small but growing.  \nPig products have some of the most versatile uses and pigs have the highest profit potential of all farm animals. They cost relatively little to maintain and feed but are often more difficult to farm than cattle, goats and sheep, although they produce more meat.  \nIt’s possible to start with just a few pigs and then to increase the number as your sows have litters.  \nIn this book we take you from finding a suitable site to keep pigs, choosing the type of pigs that are best for your situation, breeding, caring for them (including feeding) and then getting them ready for market.  \nSite Selection  \nThere are many things to consider when selecting a suitable site to keep pigs, such as accessibility and availability of water and drainage.  \nIt is possible to keep pigs in an open field, but good fencing will be needed as they are very strong animals. You will also need a shelter to protect the pigs from the sun as they can suffer from heat stroke, particularly if the temperature exceeds 30ºC. A white-painted shelter will reflect the sun and stay cooler.
