\n# Preface\n\nThis introduction to physical science is published as a contributionto the literature of general education. The two volumes are a radicalrevision of mimeographed notes prepared for an introductorycourse formerly given by the author in collaboration with ProfessorGerald Holton as part of the Harvard College program in generaleducation. The book was planned as a text for nonscience inajorsin liberal-arts colleges, but it is my hope that it may be of interestalso to mature general readers and to teachers of introductoryscience in secondary schools. \nThe book combines an account of the fundamental conceptsand principles of physical science with sketches of the history of thesubject from its Greek beginnings to World War II.It is neither asystematic account of the achievements of physical science nor ahistory of the subject, but a personal response to the question,“What instruction in that field should be given today to collegestudents who do not plan to enter scientific careers?” \nSpecial education makes specialists. It provides the student withthe knowledge and skills needed for a specific vocation. Its goalis definite;its educational program need not look to the left orright as it moves toward that goal.General education, however, has no such narrow focus. It is education independent of vocationalbias for all who wish to understand the world they live in.Thepurpose of general education is to enlarge the mind and developthe critical faculties. It seeks to prepare the student to share in theintellectual life of his time and to cope with the problems that willconfront him as a responsible member of society. \nClearly,any specific plan for general education ","cbCaieyMrXp725J0","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaieyMrXp725J0","pdf",4124785,"English","#
