of Charles Guenther have had a leg-endary reputation among poets and editors since hisfirst publication in Palisade magazine with WilliamCarlos Williams over twenty-five years ago.PHRASE/PARAPHRASE,the first book-length selection of hisverse, includes work reprinted from a wide range ofperiodicals. It also contains twenty-five poems neverbefore published. \nPHRASE/PARAPHRASE reveals an important con-stant of the poet's nature:a double awareness of ac-tuality and history.Writing in the Bulletin oftbe NewYork Public Library,Julius A.Molinaro of Torontonoted that \"Guenther...has been referred to as oneof those modern American poets—others would beJames Dickey,Louis Simpson,W.S.Merwin,andDenise Levertov—who do not hesitate to treat suchsubjects as modern warfare, concentration camps, automobiles,or advertising.” \nOccasionally these poems show a conditioning ofthe craftsman by his dialogues and correspondencewith Ezra Pound. At other times the poet appears asa master parodist,as in \"The Brown Rat,\"whichRichard Eberhart called \"better than the original\"ofhis famous The Ground Hog.\"Rounding out thecollection are samples of the translator's art whichdrew high praise from Mark Van Doren and causedcritic Wallace Fowlie,as foreign editor of Poetrymagazine,to acclaim Guenther as \"one of the besttranslators in this country.\" \nThe Autbor \nCharles Guenther has published poems and trans-lations in more than two hundred American andforeign magazines and anthologies includingAccent,Black Mountain Review,The Critic,Kenyon Review,The
