My gear included the 37mm fisheye lens which, for the Mamiya RZ medium format camera system, was quite heavy. \nFortunately, as I've aged, improvements in technology have allowed us to eliminate items from our camera backpack. For example, I haven't carried a fisheye (the Canon 15mm) for a longtime. These lenses are virtually unnecessary now because in Photoshop I can reproduce the fisheye look after-the-fact. \nI typically don't like curved horizontal and vertical lines, but once in a while I think the effect works. In the drone shot below of a volcanic crater in Iceland, for instance, the curved horizon line looks like the natural curvature of the earth--even though in the original image the horizon is level. \nThe procedure is easy to do. In Photoshop, goto Filter > Lens Correction. In the dialog box that opens (partially shown on the next page) click on the Custom tab (red arrow). This opens a new list of options, and you'll want to use the Remove Distortion slider (blue arrow) . I know this seems counter intuitive since you'll \nbe introducing distortion. By moving the slider to the left, horizontal lines curve ina convex fashion as you can see in the picture of the volcanic crater on the previous page. \nI did the same thing with another drone image of a braided river in Iceland, below. There has to be enough space in the sky for this technique to work because in the process of applying a curvature, some of the sky in the top middle of the frame is lost. Therefore, if the distance between the land and the top of the frame is narrow, use Edit> Generative Fill to add area to the picture. I had to do that in the image below or else the top of the curvature would have expanded past the border of the picture. \nThis technique doesn't only work with \nphotographs taken from drones. In the photo above, the white dunes of Lencois Maranhenses National Park in Brazil were photographed from the ground with my Canon R5 and a 100-500mm. In post, I applied the same fisheye curvature. The effect has the biggest effect and shows the most curvature at the horizon, although several of the dunes exhibit curvature as well. \nAt sunset, the same area looked really dramatic, right. This image shows more of a curvature because I moved the Remove Distortion slider more to the left. \nIf you go too far, the picture becomes totally distorted and it doesn't work at all. Carefully applying the fisheye look until it looks \ngood is what's called for. \nThis same dialog box also allows you to eliminate chromatic aberration in photos, and you can also apply a vignette. § \nAbandoned in Georgia photo tour \nApril 12-18, 2027 \nAWB \nWHEN TO USE IT, WHEN NOT TO USE IT \nost nature and travel pho \nMtaougrtoapherswhitIe knowbalanchce, oosoer \nAWB, for virtually all of \ntheir picture taking.
