If the foundation does not hold, neither will anything else. \nIn philosophy, the fundamentals are metaphysics and epistemology. On the basisof a knowable universe and of a rational faculty's competence to grasp it,you can de-fine man's proper ethics, politics and esthetics. (And if you make an error, you re-tain the means and the frame of reference necessary to correct it.)But what will youaccomplish if you advocate honesty in ethics, while telling men that there is no suchthing as truth, fact or reality? What will you do if you advocate political freedomon the grounds that you feel it is good, and find yourself confronting an ambitiousthug who declares that he feels quite differently? \nThe layman's error,in regard to philosophy,is the tendency to accept conse-quences while ignoring their causes -to take the end result of a long sequence ofthought as the given and to regard it as \"self-evident\"or as an irreducible primary, while negating its preconditions.Examples can be seen all around us,particularly inpolitics. There are liberals who want to preserve individual freedom while denyingits source:individual rights. There are religious conservatives who claim to advocatecapitalism while attacking its root:reason. There are sundry \"1ibertarians\"who pla-giarize the Objectivist theory of politics, while rejecting the metaphysics,episte-mology and ethics on which it rests. That attitude,of course,is not confined tophilosophy:its simplest example is the people who scream that they need more gas andthat the oil industry should be taxed out of existence. \nAs a philosophical detective, you must remember that nothing is self-evidentexcept the material of sensory perception -and that an irreducible primary is a factwhich cannot be analyzed(i.e.,broken into components)or derived from antecedentfacts. You must examine your own convictions and any idea or theory you study, byasking:Is this an irreducible primary -and,if not, what does it depend on?You \nmust ask the same question about any answer you obtain, until you do come to an irre-ducible primary:if a given idea contradicts a primary, the idea is false. This proc-ess will lead you to the field of metaphysics and epistemology -and you will discoverin what way every aspect of man's knowledge depends on that field and stands or fallswith it. \nThere is an old fable which I read in Russian(I do not know whether it existsin English)。A pig comes upon an oak tree, devours the acorns strewn on the groundand, when his belly is full, starts digging the soil to undercut the oak tree's roots.A bird perched on a high branch upbraids him,saying:\"If you could lift your snoot, you would discover that the acorns grow on this tree.\" \nIn order to avoid that pig's role in the forest of the intellect, one must knowand protect the metaphysical-epistemological tree that produces the acorns of one'sconvictions, goals and desires.And,conversely,on","cbCainzunERqjClF","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCainzunERqjClF","pdf",2078724,"English","# PHILOSOPHICAL DETECTION\n## Studying philosophy as detective work\n## Fundamentals: metaphysics and epistemology\n## Critique of common philosophical errors","[{\"question\":\"How does the text suggest studying philosophy?\",\"answer\":\"It recommends approaching philosophy like a detective story, focusing on discovering whether an abstract system is true or false by examining what is significant and essential.\"},{\"question\":\"Why are metaphysics and epistemology treated as fundamentals?\",\"answer\":\"The text states that on a knowable universe and the rational faculty’s competence, one can define proper ethics, politics, and aesthetics; if the foundation does not hold, nothing else will.\"},{\"question\":\"What is the method for testing whether an idea is valid?\",\"answer\":\"It instructs readers to ask whether an idea is an irreducible primary; if it depends on something and contradicts a primary, the idea is false, and the process continues until primaries are reached.\"}]","PHILOSOPHICAL DETECTION - Vol.3 - No.9 - January 28, 1974 | PDF",1790668881,13]
