the Southwestern Institute of Forensic Sciences Dallas,Texas \n# PHENCYLCLIDINE DETECTION IN MEDICALEXAMINER AUTOPSIES\n\nGarriott,J.C.and Ruff,R.M.Institute of Forensic Sciences,Dallas,TX \nIn view of the apparent upsurge in use of phencycliding(PCP)by the drug-abuse community,as reported inseveral areas of the country 1-4,it was considered ofinterest to survey the medical examiner cases of DallasCounty to attempt to get some measure of its incidence ofuseSince PCP is often associated with death occurringunder violent circumstances, and all deaths ofthis type areinvestigated by the medical examiner, this populationwould seem to be a good indication for use of this drug inthe community.\"Drug abuse\"deaths also should beindicative of the types of drugs used under illicitcircumstances. \nIn the Dallas County Medical Examiner's office,it isestimated that at least 80%of casesinvolving violent deathare screened for \"basic drugs.\"All drug abuse cases orsuspected overdoses are so screened.By this screen (seearticle“Phencyclidine in Clinical Cases, this issue),phencyclidine is detected at a level of about 0.01 mg/Loptimally.From previous surveys,it appears that thisrepresents a low dose level, and that this may be detectedfor up to 20 hours after ingestion.Urinary concentrationresults in levels at least 10 times higher than those inblood,'increasing the capability for detecting PCP afteruse.Over the last 6 months of 1979,100 cases involvingviolent circumstances and with any suspicion of drug usehave been screened by urine analysis.None of these havebeen positive for PCP. \n## Results\n\nIn the last 3 years(1977,1978,1979),six medicalexaminer cases have been identified as having PCPdetected in blood,on routine screening for basic drugs. Two of these occurred in 1977 and four in 1978.Four ofthese were homicide victims, while two were deaths frommixed drug overdose.None were found in 1979. \nVolume 10,No.4 October-December,1979 \nCase Discussion\n\nSeveral studies of PCP related deaths have appeared inthe literature.1.2.3 Nineteen deaths with PCP detectedoccurred in two California counties over 6years,14 of whichwere in a two and a half period from January,1974 throughJune,1977.In another California site,7 cases of PCPdetection were in deaths by drowning or other traumaticcircumstances, while 4 cases ofdeath from overdose of PCPwere reported. \nThe six cases of detection in Dallas County over a three-year period, indicate its presence in the communityas a drugproblem. It is not however, apparently as prevalent here as itis in some other areas of the country. \n## References\n\n1.Bailey,D.N.,and Shaw,R.F.Phencyclidine abuse:Plasma levels and clinical findings in casual users and inphencyclidine-relateed
