Over and over, \nwith a dissonant, electric hum, until every so often \nits joints will falter, extending its visit into my eyes, until it tires of gifting me life and picks up again. \nNow it only rests, out of breath. \n“Waiting for Weather” \n“Paint It Black” \nColt Muir \nI stared at the man in the mirror and he stared back. The man's eyes were bloodied and bruised. I couldn’t even see his pupil past the crimson sclera. He looked like me, but that was not me. His blonde hair almost seemed golden, covered in blood, like the wings of an angel covered in blood. I almost retched atthe sight. A disgusting looking man. A man who killed his family; his daughter, his wife. But then again, my guardian angel. My Altruist. I finally willed myself to stop staring at the man and washed my face, before stumbling into the closet. Dressed, I walked out of the closet and saw my room turn black. It's as ifI willed the walls, nightstand, and furniture to immediately change. Slowly I walked out of my room, and then outside. \nI walked for what feels like hours, completely ignoring my car in the driveway. Morning changed to early evening as I finally reached my destination. I saw a line of cars and they’re all painted black. People all around the graveyard looked at mein disgust. What kind of husband is late for his wife's funeral? What kind of father? But I didn’t care. None of them felt as I do at this moment. They put them in the ground, and after a few hours I was the only one still there. My breath was fast and uneven, but I couldn’t force any tears out of my face. It was too much. I could hardly see the black hair covering my eyes. I felt the hair on my face. A sign of what he had become. What I have become. I felt around in my pocket for the thing I needed most, a cigarette. That's when I heard a woman offer me one. \nMy mind slowed as I saw the woman in front of me. Who was she? A ghost? A sister? A lover? A daughter? A mother? I didn’t know. I’d forgotten who she was, but something inside told me I knew her once. Who was the woman in front of me? The man from the mirror appeared in the corner of my eye. He sat on a gravestone, arms crossed; a frown sat on his face.“Can you believe this ‘Hem? She had the gall to show up here, after not seeing us for over twenty years. Can you even think of the audacity of her?-” His voice was cut off by the woman speaking again. She approached me and smiled slyly. I had to look upwards to look her in the eyes.“Long time no see, little brother.” \n“Why is she here now after twenty years? She’s no good ‘Hem. You need to leave. Now. Get somewhere safe.” The Altruist stood from the grave and walked up to me, side by side with her. Of course she couldn’t see him. No one could. \nI blinked a couple of times and stood, saying nothing to the lady. I tried walking straight past her, but she pulled my arm back. Surprisingly, tears fell out \nof her eyes slowly. A sign of remorse. A sign she cared.“Stay. At least pray with me for them.” \nI haven't prayed since I was little. Since the death of our parents.
