It has been more than a century since it was established in 1916, and BHU has, over the years, epitomised a seamless synthesis of ancient wisdom and modern scientific temper. It is a Central University, with the Hon'ble President of India as its Visitor.  \nThe Founder's Vision  \nThe founder of BHU, Mahamana Pandit Madan Mohan Malaviya, envisaged it as a teaching, examining and residential university, distinct from other prevailing universities of the time, which were primarily examining universities. He emphasised the preservation of all that was good and great in our ancient civilisation, the promotion of learning and research in the arts and sciences, along with the advancement and diffusion of scientific, technical, and professional knowledge.  \nThe essence of this vision is perhaps best expressed in Mahamana’s own words:  \n\"A Teaching University would but half perform its function, if it does not seek to develop the heartpower of its scholars with the same solicitude with which it would develop their brain- power. Hence, it is that the proposed University has placed the formation of character in youth as one of its principal objects. It will seek not merely to turn out men as engineers, scientists, doctors, merchants, theologians , but also as men of high character, probity and honour, whose conduct through life will show that they bear the hall-mark of a great University.\"  \nThe University  \nBHU is a vast educational cosmos comprising 5 Institutes, 16 Faculties, 136 Departments, and the Mahila Mahavidyalaya.
