Perspectives and themes\n\n## What is the play about?\n\nImagine that you can travel back in time to around 1606.You meet William Shakespeare a few minutes after hehas finished writing Macbeth. You ask him 'What is theplay about?'But,like all great artists,Shakespeare doesn'tseem interested in explaining his work.He leaves that upto others. He seems to say:'Here it is.Read it,perform it,make of it what you will' \nThere has been no shortage of responses to thatinvitation!Macbeth has been hugely popular ever since itwas first performed. The thousands of productions andmillions of words written about it show that there is nosingle'right way'of thinking about or performing the play. You will probably have noticed this as you looked at thephotographs of different productions in this book. \nThe play is like a kaleidoscope.Every time it is \nperformed it reveals different shapes, patterns, meanings, interpretations. For example, you could think aboutMacbeth as: \n·a play of political and social realism, which showshow an oppressive hierarchical society producescorrupt individuals \n·a tragedy in which a great man falls because of afatal flaw in his character(Macbeth's ambition causeshis death) \n·a historical thriller with many elements of a fast- \nmoving,action-packed murder story \n·a moral tale advising against regicide(the murder ofa king);remember, this would have pleased James l \n·a psychological study of a murderer's mind, inwhich Macbeth constantly reveals his troubledinnermost thoughts. \nThere are also various interpretive standpointsthat allow different'readings'of the play.Peoplehave interpreted Macbeth according to a numberof perspectives. These include: \nFeminist perspectives-looking at the way womenare represented \nCultural materialist perspectives-looking at theway politics, wealth and power strongly influence everyhuman relationship \nNew historicist perspectives-focusing on the \nrepressive conditions of Shakespeare's own time \nPsychoanalytical perspectives-looking at the \nunconscious and the irrational,as well as the impactof repressed sexuality and desire \nLiberal humanist perspectives -freedom \nand human progress are the goals of life, and finalreconciliation and harmony are possible \n◆ In pairs, talk about which of the perspectivesdescribed above would be most helpful in exploringMacbeth further. Then, either individually ortogether, write the script for a dialogue betweentwo people with different perspectives on the play.Try to show how their conversation develops, andencourage them to agree or disagree with eachother about the meaning of Macbeth. \n## Themes\n\nAnother way of answering the question'What is Macbethabout?'is to identify the themes of the play.Themes areideas or concepts of fundamental importance that recurthroughout the play, linking together plot, characters andlanguage.Themes echo, reinforce and comment uponeach other-and the whole play-in interesting ways.Forexample,it is hard to write about appearance and realityin the play without referring to the manifestation of evilor the hidden dangers beneath a pleasing exterior It isequally difficult to write about kingship and masculinitywithout talking about the themes of loyalty and ambition. \nAs you can see, themes are not individual categories buta 'tangle'of ideas and concerns that are interrelated incomplex ways.In your writing you should aim to explorethe way these themes cross over and illuminate eachother, rather than simply listing each of the themes. \nYou might also like to think about the way the themeswork at different levels:the individual level (psychologicalicalor personal);the social level(linked to society andnation);and the natural level (the natural or supernaturaluralworld). For example,in Macbeth you can clearly see howowthe theme of appearance and reality works across allthree of these levels. \nThe themes of Macbeth include the following: \nAmbition-the ruthless seeking of power by Macbeth,th,urged on by his equally ambitious wife.It can be
