GALLENKIRCH, MONTAFON, JULY 1943  \nF elix sat in his father ’s worn armchair, which still occupied its regular  \nplace in the living room. Rays of sunshine fell through the crocheted curtains, painting beautiful patterns on the worn-out wooden floor.  \nHis trusted mountain boots sat on the old table, scuffed and worn from years of use. Replacing them wasn’t an option. As long as the war dragged on, every bit of leather and cloth went to the front lines. Civilians were left to patch and pray their old things would hold a little longer.  \nWith practiced movements, he dipped the soft cloth into the tin of leather grease. The smell of beeswax and beef tallow wafted into his nostrils, mingling with the smoke from the fire in the stove. Felix loved the scent, because it indicated he would soon be heading into the mountains again. He simply wasn’t meant for a regular life as a farmer.  \nCarefully, he massaged the grease into the cracks of the worn boot. His fingers felt every seam and every scratch in the brown leather, which turned supple under his care, shining almost as if new. These mountain boots were his faithful companions, without them he would be doomed. When he finished, he examined his work with satisfaction before placing them next to the crackling stove.  \nHis youngest sister, Valentina, often joked that he loved those boots more than he could ever love a woman, and that was the reason he had never married.  \nThe door opened with a creak and Valentina entered, an apron tied around her hips. Together with Felix and their frail mother, she and her five children lived in their parents’ house.  \n“Here you are. I’ve been looking for you.” The resolute woman in her late thirties leaned against the doorframe. Her gaze fell on the freshly polished boots standing next to the stove, and she furrowed her brow.“How much longer do you plan to patch them up?”  \nFelix gently stroked the leather.“They need to last through one more winter.”  \nValentina sat on the armrest of his chair.“The next time you cross the border into Switzerland, bring some leather and a last. The old cobbler Pichelhuber can make you new ones. He’s discreet.”  \n“I’d have to break them in first, and where would I find the time?”  \nThe practical woman shook her head.“Do you really want to wait until the soles fall off your feet before
