That was when I wasa little girl in the early 60s, growing up ina rubber plantation off Island Club Road. AhKong was always happy to visit us in Singapore to spend a few months with a different set of grandchildren and for a change of scenery from the routine of home in Bukit Baru, Malacca. I would fondly look on ashe wandered in the garden singing, his jaunty planter’shat shielding him from the afternoon sun. \nHalfa century later, this popular Malay dittyremains as relevant as ever. The world may have changed but somethings do not. The generation gap has closed forme; I have grown up, searched and now take pride in my Peranakan identity where previously I thought it stuffy and old-fashioned. I can sing the same tune of my 20-something daughter now. Gladly forme, she and her brother are crossing the generational gap and are taking an interest to find their roots. \nEncouragingly, more young people of her generation are going along the same path. Acceptance and pride in the culture are growing. While the challenge remains to attract more young members to participate actively in the Association, I think the spirit of the culture burns brighter than ever. In the following pages, a survey of events in recent years points to the fact that the Peranakan culture has forgeda stronger impression among our youths than in past decades. And energy. And creativity. \nJust look atthe young Peranakanswho are joining \nand giving their all at major events such asthe Youth Olympic Games, Formula One and atthe first overseas exhibition of Peranakan culture in Paris.
