No, Cecil, she thought, I do not belong here. This place isn’t for people like me.  \nSonny knew she was supposed to be awestruck by the landscape when the car pulled up to Sanctuary Resort & Spa: the jagged red mountain ranges surrounding her, the juxtaposition of the cacti and arid ground and unforgiving heat with the overflowing fountain in the center of the roundabout entrance. But she was just relieved to be done traveling. It was unexpectedly tiring, flying from Pennsylvania to Arizona, when really all she did was sit.  \nSonny became cranky and irritated by crowds and the sheer idiocy of people, which there was no shortage of in airports. She watched people clumsily maneuver their luggage and cram into the one empty seat at their gate instead of sitting in one of the forty empty seats just over there, as if sitting at the wrong gate would prevent them from flying. Traveling made people more susceptible to stupidity and insolence. Sonny had only flown once before (technically twice, round trip), but even she knew this universal truth. They wouldn’t miss the boarding announcement because they were an extra twenty feet away and everyone knew they were going to stand up as soon as they heard that “boarding will start in a few moments” anyway, just so they could squeeze in before everyone else, because that extra ninety seconds on the plane would really make all the difference.  \nFlying was disgusting. Sonny had been stuck sitting next to a child on the plane. She knew that he was staring at her—she could always feel the sensation of eyes upon her—but she pretended not to notice. Eventually, she couldn’t take it and needed it to stop, so she conceded and looked at him and that’s when he told her,“I like beans.”  \nSonny thought for a moment, unsure how to respond to this child of—four, five, six, nine years? She didn’t know anything about kids despite once having been one, and she didn’t know the rules about engaging with them. She looked up at the mom in hopes of help, but she was completely oblivious, so after a moment of deliberation Sonny finally nodded and told him,“Me too.”  \nThe boy accepted her answer and turned his full attention to a superhero movie that Sonny suspected was too violent for a child his age, however old that was. Later, during the flight, Sonny could feel the boy’s eyes upon her again, but she wouldn’t turn toward him that time, despite her curiosity of what he might tell her, because she could also see out of the corner of her eye that he was picking his nose and eating it. Sonny remembered the distinct tangy taste from her own childhood, but it still made her gag. She slid her black Beats over her ears. They looked comically large on her small head, and they had stopped working a week after she’d snagged them from a bucket labeled Electronic Miscellany at her local Goodwill. She wore them daily, enjoying the barrier they provided to the outside world, the clear message they conveyed to people: Leave Me Alone.
