long last Nicaragua has become anactive vortex of struggle against thedynasty which has for 44 years sappedthe hopes and well-being of the people. \nSince the words of tribute pronouncedin memory of Pedro Joaquin Chamorro, the assassinated champion of freedom—coupled with repugnance against the in-herent cause of that murder, the dynas-tic posture of the Somoza family andthe ambiance of desperation among Nic-araguans,the long-atrophied situation ofthe country appears finally to be in astate of ferment, which may lead to“finis”for Somozist rule. \nDon't Tread on Me! \nSince January 10th,the day when theassassin's bullet accomplished its coward-ly purpose, the country and its peopleseem no longer content to remain a sub-missive feoff of the ruling clan:stu-dents,workers,peasants and even thebusiness community have become intentto brave the reprisals of the regime andits armed forces,to express to the worldtheir intention to emerge from the dark-ness that has covered the land for morethan four decades, and to initiate demo-cratic rule. \nThis writer first encountered the Nic-araguan tragedy some time in the thir-ties,when she met former PresidentSacasa as she passed briefly throughNew York—a defeated, bitter man whohad been recently victimized on twofronts:One,his treacherous wily be-trayal by his relative, the U.S.-inflatedchief of the National Constabulary.Ana-stasio Somoza,Sr.—progenitor of thesucceeding pretenders to the“throne.”The second betrayal was the inept pol-icy of the United States occupationforces, plus the pusillanimous role of thethen Secretary of State, who permittedthe usurpation of the country by itsmost acquisitive and ill-endowed policechief. Thus began the malignant growthwhich has continued to devour the coun-try to this date. \n* \nOne wonders how it is possible in ourmoder world, that whole peoples—suchas in Nicaragua,Haiti or Paraguay ofour hemisphere;not to speak of the in-undated Cuba now the predator of thenew African peoples—are being devour-ed by other human incubi.Self-created \nHEMISPHERICA \nMAY,1978 \n# PEOPLE ASK RIDDANCE OF SOMOZAS\n\n## By FRANCES R.GRANT\n\nwithin a country,or ineubated by out-side
