This technique allows the learners to focus on what the problem is and what they have to do to solve it rather than the maths. \nHere is a Functional Skills problem-solving question: \nSam and Lewis work in sales. Lewis sells 21 cars in a month Sam sells 14 cars in a month \nHow long would it take them to sell 250 cars? \nHere is a numberless version: \nSam and Lewis work in sales. Lewis sells some cars in a month Sam sells less cars in a month \nHow long would it take them to sell a certain number of cars? \nThe numberless version allows the learners to focus on what needs to be done, rather than on doing it. It means that they could then follow this formula and answer the question regardless of the numbers in there. \nNumberless problem-solving helps learners focus on understanding the language of the question, a common issue in Functional Skills. \nNumberless problem-solving is also ideal for facilitating discussion among learners about how they would solve problems. \nWhen introducing it into the classroom for the first time it might be best to start with some scaffolded questions and discussions to ensure that the learners understand what is expected of them. \nThe Resources \nWe have created five resources to use with learners: \n• Entry 3 \n• Level 1 \n• Level 2 \n• Level 1 Area, Perimeter and Volume \n• Level 2 Area, Perimeter and Volume \nWhat an answer might look like \nWhile designing these questions, we asked a group of learners to trial the Entry 3 ones. This is an example of a successful answer: \nWith the following answer, it might be worth having a discussion with the learner about how this might cause them some confusion. \nThanks to Rebecca Atherfold for trialling the questions and her feedback.","cbCaicGrzhahhzII","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaicGrzhahhzII","pdf",167734,"English","# What is numberless problem solving?\n# The Resources\n# What an answer might look like","[{\"question\":\"What is the primary benefit of numberless problem-solving?\",\"answer\":\"It allows learners to focus on understanding the structure, language, and logic of a mathematical problem without being distracted by specific numbers.\"},{\"question\":\"What skill levels are covered in the provided resources?\",\"answer\":\"The resources are tailored for Entry 3, Level 1, and Level 2 learners, with specific guides for Area, Perimeter, and Volume.\"},{\"question\":\"How should educators introduce this technique in the classroom?\",\"answer\":\"It is recommended to start with scaffolded questions and structured group discussions to help learners grasp the expected approach before moving to independent problem-solving.\"}]","Pearson Functional Skills Maths - Numberless Problem-Solving Guide | PDF",1792464959]
