getting richer.'These words of Yves Congar's,addressed to the World Congress at Lyon,describe a situationwhich is forcing Christians to think seriously about their com-mitment in society—especially their political commitment.The equal distribution of wealth throughout the world—andthis was stressed repeatedly in the recent Pax Romana/WSCFConsultation,at Chevetogne,on the Christian's role in society—is not a question of almsgiving or a 'counsel of perfection’,but a simple matter of justice.  \nBut how can it be achieved?One radical suggestion isto attack the offending economic system,i.e.capitalism,whichhas a stranglehold over world markets.The most strikingexample of this position is the extreme left-wing group ofCatholics in England,whose mouthpiece is the magazine 'Slant',and whose 'manifesto’is reviewed in this issue.They claimthat the only viable political option for a Christian is socialism,and one based on Marxist principles.Before crying wolf,andimmediately labelling them crypto-communists,we should listento,and try to evaluate,what they have to say.  \nWhile it is obvious that Marx's criticism of capitalism istoo important and coherent to be dismissed,and that hiscriticism of religion too can give us pause for thought,yet thesimple annexing of his theories brings with it,in my opinion,three possible dangers.  \nFirst,of falling into the very over-simplification and rigiddogmatism that we are trying to outgrow in the post-conciliarChurch.Life is always more complex than any ideology orphilosophical system would have us believe,and if it isscandalous that the Church has forbidden people to votesocialist under pain of mortal sin,it would be equally scan-dalous to press for the same attitude towards people votingconservative.What we need in the Church is a greater freedomof conscience,and,as Vincent Buckley says of those who wishto mobilise the Church for political ends,'However good theirintentions,they actually press for an extension,not a lessening,of the old Catholic habit of imposing on consciences'.  \nSecond,of remaining on a purely intellectual,theoreticaland idealistic plane,while ignoring historical reality.No-onecan claim that the actual political regimes and dictatorshipsthat have resulted directly from Marxist theory —from Stalin'sRussia to Mao's China一，with their record of fanaticism andsavage repression of all deviation from the party line,aregood advertisements for Marxism.  \nAnd this leads to the third danger,perhaps the mostserious as it would appear to be inherent in Marxist philo-sophy,which is the subordination of the individual to thecommunity.Individualism has plagued our Western tradition,God knows,—and not least in our understanding and practiceof Christianity一，and there is today a welcome reassertionof the importance of the community,and of our solidarity withall men,both in philosophy(Merleau-Ponty,Wittgenstein,Marx)and in the Church,with the rediscovery of collegiality,of the'équipe',both clerical and lay,and of the community aspectof the liturgy and sacraments.But there is a line which mustbe drawn;there is the inviolability of each individual personwhich must never be sacrificed to the collectivity,for whateverultimate good.  \nWhatever one's attitude towards Marxism,one thing iscertain:we must collaborate
