The opening chapter establishes a tense first day: rain-soaked ruins, rotting structures, and immediate signs of danger as a collapsed interior reveals a nest of oversized rats. With limited gold drained by corrupt bureaucracy, Jack’s plans for a quiet hearth are threatened by the property’s chaotic condition and unseen adversaries.","Paws &Pints \nJames Winters \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCopyright © 2026 by James Winters All rights reserved. \nNo part of this publication may be reproduced, distributed, or transmitted in any form or by any means, including photocopying, recording, or other electronic or mechanical methods, without the prior written permission of the publisher, except as permitted by U.S. copyright law. Jack’s Journal—Entry \\#1 Check this out! \n[OceanofPDF.com](OceanofPDF.com) \nCHAPTER ONE \nThe Deed \nThe frontier mud clung to his boots like wet mortar, fighting him for every step. \nJack Cross paused, planting his feet on a relatively dry patch of weeds, and let out a slow, controlled breath. The air out here was entirely different from the capital. There was no smell of sulphur, no burning pitch, and no distant shouting of incompetent officers barking contradictory orders. It just smelled like wet pine needles and rotting wood. \nHe reached up, wiping a streak of rainwater from his forehead. His knuckles scraped against the faded scar running along his jawline; a permanent parting gift from a fortress breach three years ago. He’d spent ten years bleeding for the empire, fighting border wars that didn’t matter, and playing politics with nobles who’d never held a blade. \nNow, he was officially retired. \nJack adjusted the thick canvas strap of his travel pack, feeling it dig into his aching shoulder. Deep inside the worn leather lay a small pouch containing what little gold he had left from his military pension and severance pay. \nThe corrupt bureaucrat in the capital had already drained most of his life savings just for the deed. It was barely enough coin to survive a harsh winter, let alone renovate a ruin. But a comfortable estate in the inner cities meant neighbours, and neighbours meant local lords, taxes, and taking orders. \nNo local lords, no marching orders. Just quiet. \nHe pulled the folded, wax-sealed deed from his leather coat. The snivelling clerk who sold it to him had practically laughed in his face, calling Jack a fool for buying an abandoned tavern in the middle of nowhere. The paperwork claimed the property was a functioning tavern on a major neutral trade route. \nJack looked up from the parchment and stared at the building. Great. Fantastic. Just what my retirement needed. \nCalling it a ruin was being generous. The two-story stone and timber building sagged heavily to the left, groaning audibly as a gust of windswept across the crossroads. Half of the wooden shingles had been stripped from the roof by decades of harsh weather, leaving gaping holes that exposed the dark interior to the rain. The wrap-around front porch was buried under a suffocating layer of creeping ivy, and the main double doors hung precariously off a single rusted iron hinge. \nJack kicked","cbCaib9rMhIuyMJn","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaib9rMhIuyMJn","pdf",2243497,2,377,"English","en",105,"# Contents\n## The Deed\n## Assessing the Damage\n## The First Real Meal\n## The Ledger Update\n## Shadow on the Crossroads\n## The First Coin\n## Rhythm of the Hearth\n## Late-Night Inventory\n## A Changing Ledger\n## Chloe's Keen Eye","[{\"question\":\"Who is the protagonist at the beginning of the story?\",\"answer\":\"Jack Cross is the protagonist, newly retired after years serving the empire and now trying to start a quiet life.\"},{\"question\":\"What problem does Jack face right after buying the property?\",\"answer\":\"The deed points to a severely run-down tavern ruin, with broken roof sections, damaged doors, and widespread decay.\"},{\"question\":\"What immediate danger appears when Jack enters the tavern?\",\"answer\":\"Overwhelming rot and an animal-den smell give way to a threat from the shadows: three oversized rats emerge and surround him.\"}]","Paws & Pints - 第1章 - The Deed | PDF",1786106545,581,{"code":4,"msg":31,"data":32},"ok",{"site_id":24,"language":23,"slug":33,"title":13,"keywords":34,"description":14,"schema_data":35,"social_meta":86,"head_meta":88,"extra_data":90,"updated_unix":28},"paws-pints-chapter-1-the-deed","",{"@graph":36,"@context":85},[37,53,68],{"@type":38,"itemListElement":39},"BreadcrumbList",[40,44,47,50],{"item":41,"name":42,"@type":43,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":45,"name":46,"@type":43,"position":20},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",{"item":48,"name":12,"@type":43,"position":49},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":51,"name":13,"@type":43,"position":52},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/paws-pints-chapter-1-the-deed/129555/",4,{"url":51,"name":13,"@type":54,"author":55,"headline":13,"publisher":57,"fileFormat":60,"inLanguage":23,"description":14,"dateModified":61,"datePublished":62,"encodingFormat":60,"isAccessibleForFree":63,"interactionStatistic":64},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":56},"Person",{"url":41,"name":58,"@type":59},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-08-23","2026-08-07",true,{"@type":65,"interactionType":66,"userInteractionCount":20},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":67},"ViewAction",{"@type":69,"mainEntity":70},"FAQPage",[71,77,81],{"name":72,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":74},"Who is the protagonist at the beginning of the story?","Question",{"text":75,"@type":76},"Jack Cross is the protagonist, newly retired after years serving the empire and now trying to start a quiet life.","Answer",{"name":78,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":79},"What problem does Jack face right after buying the property?",{"text":80,"@type":76},"The deed points to a severely run-down tavern ruin, with broken roof sections, damaged doors, and widespread decay.",{"name":82,"@type":73,"acceptedAnswer":83},"What immediate danger appears when Jack enters the tavern?",{"text":84,"@type":76},"Overwhelming rot and an animal-den smell give way to a threat from the shadows: three oversized rats emerge and surround him.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":51,"og:type":87,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":58,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":89,"canonical":51},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":24},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":92},[93,96,100,104,109,114,119,124,129,132,136],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":94,"slug":95},90,"story-novel",{"id":20,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":97,"show_sort_weight":98,"slug":99},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":52,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":101,"show_sort_weight":102,"slug":103},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":105,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":106,"show_sort_weight":107,"slug":108},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":110,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":111,"show_sort_weight":112,"slug":113},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":115,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":116,"show_sort_weight":117,"slug":118},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":120,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":121,"show_sort_weight":122,"slug":123},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":125,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":126,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":128},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":127,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":130,"show_sort_weight":127,"slug":131},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":133,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":134,"show_sort_weight":133,"slug":135},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":137,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":46,"category_name":138,"show_sort_weight":105,"slug":139},19,"General","general"]
