Instructions specify creatinine timing for diabetic and for patients over 75, and detail ACR-based Metformin management for non-renal compromised versus renal-compromised patients, including dialysis timing and temporary discontinuation. Additional modality-specific prep instructions address CT heart, head/neck/chest, pelvic/abdomen, contrast versus non-contrast, MRI/MRA metal removal and implant notification, mammography hygiene, bone density timing with barium, ultrasound fasting or fluid steps, x-ray post-barium waiting, IVP bowel preparation, and nuclear medicine diet and medication restrictions.",{"@graph":14,"@context":73},[15,34,56],{"@type":16,"itemListElement":17},"BreadcrumbList",[18,23,27,31],{"item":19,"name":20,"@type":21,"position":22},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",1,{"item":24,"name":25,"@type":21,"position":26},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":28,"name":29,"@type":21,"position":30},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/healthcare/","Healthcare",3,{"item":32,"name":10,"@type":21,"position":33},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/patient-preparation-guidelines-blood-work-and-contrast-instructions/401596/",4,{"url":32,"name":10,"@type":35,"image":36,"author":41,"headline":10,"publisher":44,"fileFormat":47,"inLanguage":8,"description":12,"dateModified":48,"datePublished":49,"encodingFormat":47,"isAccessibleForFree":50,"interactionStatistic":51},"DigitalDocument",{"url":37,"@type":38,"width":39,"height":40},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/patient-preparation-guidelines-blood-work-and-contrast-instructions/401596.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":42,"@type":43},"nayy☆","Person",{"url":19,"name":45,"@type":46},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-11-04","2026-09-27",true,{"@type":52,"interactionType":53,"userInteractionCount":55},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":54},"ViewAction",14,{"@type":57,"mainEntity":58},"FAQPage",[59,65,69],{"name":60,"@type":61,"acceptedAnswer":62},"What prior materials should be brought to the appointment and when should the patient arrive?","Question",{"text":63,"@type":64},"Bring any relevant prior scans (CD or LMS) so the provider can deliver the most useful diagnostic information. This will help RAYUS Radiology provide your doctor with the most useful diagnostic information. Additionally, we request that you arrive 15 minutes prior to your exam(s) to verify your insurance and registration information. \nBLOOD WORK REQUIREMENTS FOR CT WITH IV CONTRAST \nCreatinine labs are needed for all patients regardless of age who are diabetic within 2 weeks of exam, and for patients greater than 75 years old within 6 weeks of the exam. \nBLOOD WORK REQUIREMENTS FOR MRI WITH IV CONTRAST \nCreatinine labs are needed for all patients regardless of age who are diabetic within 2 weeks of exam, and for patients greater than 75 years old within 6 weeks of exam. \n*DIABETIC/RENAL COMPROMISED PATIENTS HAVING A CT OR MRI EXAM WITH IV CONTRAST \nPlease be assured these are recommendations only. If you would like to speak to one of our radiologists for the best contrast guidelines for your patient, please call us directly. The ACR recommends that patients taking Metformin be classified into one of two categories based on the patient’s renal function (as measured by GFR) . \n1. Based on the ACR recommendations, patients who are taking Metformin and are non-renal compromised i.e., with normal Creatinine level, can safely take their Metformin, without any restriction before or after the contrast injection. \n2. In patients taking Metformin who are known to have acute kidney injury or severe chronic kidney disease (stage IV or stage V), the contrast will not be administered unless the patient is scheduled for dialysis the next day or within 24 hours. In which case, the Metformin should be temporarily discontinued at the time of the procedure and be withheld for 48 hours subsequent to the procedure and re-instituted thereafter. \nCT SCAN OF THE HEART (WITH IV CONTRAST) \nNo stimulants, decongestants, caffeine, or erectile dysfunction medication 48 hours prior to exam. No allergies to Iodinated contrast. Beta blocker may be required. Okay to drink water until 1 hour prior to exam. *Diabetic/Renal Compromised Patients having a CT exam with IV Contrast, see instructions above. Take all non-diabetic medications as directed. \nCT SCAN OF HEAD/NECK/CHEST—WITH CONTRAST ONLY—NO PREP WITHOUT CONTRAST \nNothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. *Diabetic/Renal Compromised Patients having a CT exam with IV Contrast, see instructions above. Take all non-diabetic medications as directed. \nCT SCAN OF PELVIS WITH OR WITHOUT CONTRAST \nNothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. 2 hours prior to exam, drink first bottle of liquid. 30 minutes prior to exam, drink second bottle of liquid. *Diabetic/Renal Compromised Patients having a CT exam with IV Contrast, see instructions above. Take all non-diabetic medications as directed. \nCT SCAN OF ABDOMEN AND ABDOMEN/PELVIS WITH OR WITHOUT CONTRAST \nNothing to eat or drink 4 hours prior to exam. 2 hours prior to exam, drink first bottle of liquid. 30 minutes prior to exam, drink 1/2 of second bottle. Bring remaining 1/2 bottle to exam. \n*Diabetic/Renal Compromised Patients having a CT Exam with IV Contrast, See Instructions above. Take all non-diabetic medications as directed. \nCT SCAN WITHOUT CONTRAST \nNo preparation is required. \nMAGNETIC RESONANCE IMAGING (MRI/MRA) \nThere is no need to alter your medication prior to an MRI exam. During the exam, most metal items will need to be removed. Patients with metallic implants, pacemakers, metal clips, orstents must notify RAYUS prior to exam. MRCP MRI/Abdominal: \nNo eating or drinking 4 hours prior to MRI exam. \nMAMMOGRAPHY \nOn the day of your exam, do not apply underarm deodorant or powder from the waist to neck. If you must use powder or deodorant, please let us know before the exam so that we may provide you with wipes to remove it. Please wear a two-piece outfit for ease of changing and comfort.
