recognized by the United Statesgovernment in 1957.Approximately 1600 people are now registered membersof the tribe.Their south Florida headquarters are on the Hollywoodreservation.(A reservation is land set aside for the people by the UnitedStates government or land the tribes have purchased.)Tribal members livingon the Hollywood,Big Cypress,Immokalee, and the smaller Tampa and Ft.Pierce reservations speak the Mikasuki language.Seminoles living on theBrighton reservation speak the Muskogee,or Creek, language. \nThe Miccosukee Tribe of Indians of Florida was incorporated in 1962.Atthat time, leaders changed the spelling of the name for their people and thelanguage they speak from Mikasuki to \"Miccosukee,\"to distinguish their newtribe. The people live on their reservation where tribal offices are located.Thereservation is west of Miami along Highway US 41,also known as theTamiami Trail, near the Shark Valley entrance to the Everglades National \nPark.Reservation land is alsoset aside along the section of I-75 known as Alligator Alley. They have businesses on thatreservation, but they do not livethere.Over 500 people areregistered members of theMiccosukee tribe. \nSome south Florida NativeAmericans choose not tobelong to either tribe and donot live on a reservation. \n00 nosJ anifo0 y089J \nmalaye naidu sildu9 \nsunsVA
