Most couples rely on nonverbal communication which can be problematic. This exercise is designed to help couples expand their options and be more comfortable with sexual language in their marriage. See our website for additional ideas.
Types of Language.
Sexual language can be broken down into various groups. While these language groups vary depending on who you read, start with the following four groups:
• Clinical language – the professional language your doctor might use (e.g., penis)
• Euphemisms – these words and Phrases will tend to be a bit more erotic (e.g., love muscle)
• Slang – generally cruder than the euphemisms (e.g., prick)
• Kiddie – words and Phrases more common with children (e.g., pee-pee)
Exercise Instructions.
Part One – on your own
1. Column 1-Using the following categories, make a list of words and phrases that fit in the category identified at the top of the page. List words/phrases you use and those you don’t. Try to utilize all four groups of sexual language. (e.g., for male genitalia you might list all the above plus those that reflect scrotum, testicles, etc.)
2. Column 2-After listing all the words/phrases you can, go back through and rate them in terms of your personal preference.
Part Two – with your spouse
3. Discuss your preferences (Column 1 and 2) with your spouse. Seek to understand how they view the different words/phrases. What is their emotional reaction to the different words/phrases? Do they have a story associated with the word/phrase?
4. Column 3-Identify how you plan to use the word/phrase in your marriage. Remember to care for each other. Generally, the more conservative choice between the two of you is the safest.
5. Try using the preferred language chosen. Revisit and reevaluate since actual use may feel different than you expected when discussing it as a couple.
[http://IntimateMarriage.org](http://IntimateMarriage.org)[ ](http://IntimateMarriage.org)©2018
Passionate Intimacy
Couple Exercises
MALE GENITALIA

| Word/Phrase
Clinical • Euphemisms • Slang • Kiddie | Your Reaction
Hate...Dislike...Neutral...Like...Love | Use in Marriage |
| --- | --- | --- |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |
| | ➀ ➁ ➂ ➃ ➄ ➅ ➆ ➇ ➈ ➉
Comment | ☐ Off limits ☐ Special case
☐ General discussion ☐ During lovemaking |

[http://IntimateMarriage.org](http://IntimateMarriage.org)[ ](http://IntimateMarriage.org)©2018
Passionate ","cbCaikaTeLTKONVI","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikaTeLTKONVI","pdf",220393,"English","# Types of Language
## Exercise Instructions
# Part One: On Your Own
# Part Two: With Your Spouse
# Male Genitalia
# Female Genitalia
# Breasts/Nipples","[{"question":"What are the four categories of sexual language used in the exercise?","answer":"The exercise groups sexual language into clinical terms, euphemisms, slang, and kiddie words."},{"question":"What should partners do in Part One?","answer":"Create a list of words and phrases for each category, track which ones you use, and rate them by personal preference."},{"question":"How is the exercise completed with a spouse in Part Two?","answer":"Partners discuss their preferences, share emotional reactions and personal stories tied to specific words, then decide how they plan to use each word in their marriage respectfully."}]","Passionate Intimacy - Couple Exercises - Sexual Language Exercise - Male and Female Genitalia | PDF",1790863302,14]
