In the research, women participants rated photos of average-looking men shown with an attractive female partner, where the relationship label varied among girlfriend, ex-girlfriend, cousin, and adopted sister. Men depicted with girlfriends consistently received higher desirability ratings than men shown with exes or relatives. A second group rated average-looking men with an attractive female described specifically as a definite girlfriend, again finding partnered men more desirable.
