of Sullivan's work has al-ready been gone over for its theoretical and diagnostic signifi-cance,leaving it bare enough now to show forth bits and piecesof technical advice.I have developed these into a systematictechnique that can be called,in Sullivan's words,participantobservation.  \nSullivan's own account of his working methods,The Psychi-atric Interview,is a conglomerate of technical suggestions,likemost descriptions of psychotherapy.It incorporates the objec-tive-descriptive examination,free associative method,socialservice casework,and what interests us the most,his remark-able intuition.The basic tools of diagnostic or therapeuticpower spring from the inventive gifts of remarkable individ-uals,whether Freud's associative method,Binswanger’s under-standing of the conditions of empathy,or Auenbrugger's abilityto compare the percussion of his father's wine barrels to thepercussion of the human chest.Sullivan gave his intuitive giftits fullest articulation in his theoretical writings,which he illus-trated richly with anecdotes.What was unique in his actualworking methods,however,remained largely unsystematized.Partly for this reason his technical suggestions strike many as  \nPARTICIPANT OBSERVATION  \nidiosyncratic,even bizarre.I suspect they must have appearedto Sullivan himself as mysterious as intuitions typically are.  \nSullivan's intuitions are striking precisely because they reflectan approach rational,coherent,sometimes compelling.SurelyFreud's early intuitions and free associative method must alsoseem mysterious to anyone not familiar with his explanations.For his part,Sullivan did not provide technical explanations.Itis therefore necessary to bring his clinical suggestions together,throw the light of his theoretical position on them and,mostimportant,draw from them their vital principles.Then we mayaccord participant observation some of the respect as a system-atic technique that we at present accord only to the
