It was hard to understand, and difficult to remember the lists they had been told. Now they were sitting in the shade of a tree near the village square just talking.  \nNothing much seemed to be happening in their small village so they went to find someone to talk to.  \nAt Miriam’s compound they saw her grandfather sitting on a log listening to the radio.  \n“What are you doing grandfather?”asked Miriam. “Well,” said grandfather,“The elections are coming up so I thought it was my duty, as a responsible citizen, to be well informed about the government, so that I know who to vote for . Run along now and let me listen.”  \nSitting at the door of her house was Miriam’s mother surrounded by bowls of beans .“Can we help mother?” asked Miriam.  \n“Oh, yes please,” said her mother,“I want to get this job finished today so that I can sell these at the market tomorrow . I hope to raise the last bit of money to pay our taxes to the government, then we can rest easy until next year.”  \nMiriam and Moses enjoyed sorting the beans and it was good to think that they were helping to pay the taxes.  \nWhen they had finished the beans they saw Moses’ big sister sitting outside her house next door . “What are you doing Mary?” asked Moses.  \n“I’m making a poster for our health lesson at school.” she replied,“When it is finished I will pin it to a tree near the health centre to remind everyone that the government wants us to cover our toilet holes to keep the flies away and protect our health.”  \nMoses spotted his big brother sitting around the side of the house and asked him what he was doing.  \n“I’m studying for my exams because I want to become a policeman and protect our village and others like it.
