blighted areaof Brooklyn has received acall from Sister MaryAgneta Augustine.ofHastings,Minnesota;Sister is superior of ourconvent in Brooklyn. \nTight quarters—but plenty of sky \n# BIG BOROUGH\n\nIwondercd what Father John Shananhan would think if he rode theelevated subway over the East River to Brooklyn,as I did.Peepingback over my shoulder at Manhattan's storied spires, like stalagmiteagainst the sky,I knew Father Shananhan would be puzzled by the pop-ular and true cxpression,\"Go to Brooklyn and sec the Manhattan sky-line.\" \nFor it seems that Father Shanahan, along with other New Yorkersof the nineteenth century, was more devoted to row boats and ferriesthan elevatcd subway trains.Father was the newly ordained priest whooffered the first Mass in the first Brooklyn Catholic Church,St.James,in September of 1823.But sincc there was no priest stationed in Brook-lyn at that time, the Catholics still made the long trip by boat to assistat Mass at Old St.Peter's in Manhattan. However, things moved swift-ly,and by 1853 Right Reverend John Loughlin was consecrated Bishopof Brooklyn and there was already a eommunity of 140,000 persons. \nIn 1898 Brooklyn became a borough of the City of New York.Nowit has its Borough President(with two votes out of 16 in the Board ofEstimate)and nine Councilmen(with g votes out of 25).There areten State Senators and twenty-two Assemblymen, and eight Representa-tives in Congress from Brooklyn. Now you are just beginning to get anidea of the size of Brooklyn.A borough is not a suburb, you know! \nBrooklyn eovers 79.79 square miles with almost 3,000,000 people. If comparisons help you—Milwaukee has 80.2 square miles with a 722,-ooo population.Ranking third in population among American eounties,Brooklyn is the most densely populated:36,00o per square mile;CookCounty, which embraccs Chicago, and leads in square miles, has 4,O00;while Los Angeles is seeond in size, and has 1,000 persons per squaremile.Brooklyn's numerous row houses have done their share on this. \nLike the rest of the world,Brooklyn's face has been changing. If itwas a joyless day when Mighty Casey struck out,the Borough had a dayto match it this past winter. To the tune of a brass band, the dugoutcrumbled at Ebbets Field, whieh served as home for forty-four years tothe Dodgers baseball team. The club has for several years been enjoyingCalifornia sunshine and other western phenomena. The ball park dis-appeared in favor of a
