is also one of the most dignified and elegant, with \nincomparable vistas leading the eye to superb architecturalfeatures,as well as being a great storehouse of art of allperiods. And few places have such abundant evidence of along and varied history, much of it linked closely with ourown. \nIn his account of the conquest of Gaul in 53BC JuliusCaesar mentions the Parisii tribe living in a settlementcalled Lutetia on an island in the Seine, the present-dayIle de la Cité.The colony the Romans established therequickly extended to the left bank of the river, where tracesof its buildings stillexist. But it was still a colony, the \ncentre of Roman Gaul being Lyon to the south.Introducedin the 3rd century by St Denis, the evangelist martyred onthe hillof Montmartre, the Christian faith soon gainedconverts among both the local people and the Romancolonists. As Roman power declined in the late 4thcentury Lutetia gradually came to be known as Paris.According to legend, when Attila and his Huns stormedinto Gaul the city was saved from destruction in 451 bythe bravery of Genevieve,a pious virgin revered after herdeath as the patron saint of Paris. \nClovis,the first Frankish king baptised in 496 as a \nChristian,chose Paris for his capital. But the empire hebuilt up was fragmented by the Merovingian kings andtheir heirs who succeeded him and,in the 8th century, bythe invading Saracens fighting under the banner of Islam-until turned back by Charles Martel,an able military \nleader who assumed power. In 751 his son Pepin the Shortsent the last Merovingian monarch to a monastery and washimself elected king of the Franks, the Pope annointinghim in 754 at the abbey church of St Denis.Merovingianrule was based on a rural economy in which towns playedlittle part, and Paris remained much as it had been underthe Romans,a small provincial town.It was little differentafter Pepin's son Charles, known as Charlemagne(from \nCarolus Magnus,or Charles the Great),was made rulerin 768 of the vast kingdom created by his father. \nWithin a generation of the death of Charlemagne in 814the empire was a shambles, the murderous Vikings sailingtheir longboats up the Seine without hindrance in 845 tosack and burn Paris, vulnerable like all other towns inGaul.Yet even from this turbulent period some buildingshave survived, among them the basilica housing the shrineof St Denis on the northern outskirts, the tower of StGermain des Pres and the little church of St Julien le \nPauvre.In 987 the last enfeebled Carolingian king died andthe nobles elected Hugues Capet as king.Under the \nCapets the fortifications of Paris were extended and withinthe walls several monasteries sprang up.The Capets \ncontrolled little territory but they did confirm Paris as theircapital, and from this time on it was around Paris that theFrench nation took shape.Evidence of these times
