The guide details how the assessments measure progress toward mastering standards, school and program effectiveness, and addresses concerns about memorization versus critical thinking and application. It also outlines classroom-based, interim, and summative types, describes English language arts and mathematics changes, and highlights college-readiness, computer-adaptive testing, and accessibility support for students.","PARENTS’ GUIDE TO \nASSESSMENTS IN IDAHO \nIn the 2014-15 school year, Idaho rolled out new assessments—the Idaho Standard Achievement Test (ISAT)—aligned to the Idaho Content Standards. The new assessments, which were developed by the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, gauge how well students are mastering the standards—and ultimately how ready they are for the next grade and for college and careers after graduation. \nWHY NEW ASSESSMENTS? \nTeachers and principals talk a lot about assessments, which are used to measure students’ academic achievement. This document highlights the end-of-year summative assessments, which judge (1) student progress toward mastering state standards, and (2) program and school effectiveness. For other assessments used, see box at right. \nNew summative assessments will address longstanding concerns that parents, educators, and employers have had about current state assessments—namely, that they measure ability to memorize facts, rather than the skills to think critically and apply knowledge. \nMore than 200 colleges and universities across the country have agreed to use students’ scores from the Smarter Balanced high school test as part of college placement. This means that high school students who take the test in 11th grade have an opportunity to jumpstart their college coursework and bypass remedial courses. \nFor more information, and a list of participating colleges, visit \n[smarterbalanced.org/higher-education](smarterbalanced.org/higher-education) \n\n| Types of assessments |\n| --- |\n| Classroom-based: Individual tests given by teachers as needed throughout the year to assess knowledge and skills in specific areas |\n| Interim: The same test repeated at set intervals to measure student growth overtime |\n| Summative: End-of-year assessments administered by the state to measure student performance against a common set of standards\u003Cbr>This document addresses summative assessments. |\n\nTHIS GUIDE INCLUDES: \n■ Overview of the Smarter Balanced assessments, which measure student proficiency against more rigorous standards \n■ Sample questions \n■ Overview of accountability for students, teachers and schools \n■ Additional resources for parents \nWhat is different about the new summative assessments? \nThe new assessments for English language arts and mathematics will enable educators to deepen their understanding of student progress from grade to grade—and, just as importantly, identify any gaps in progress so they can address them well before students enter college or the workforce. More than 4,700 educators have contributed to the development and continuous improvement of Smarter Balanced assessments as a resource to improve teaching and learning. \nNew English language arts assessments: \n■ Ask students to read more complex fiction and non-fiction texts and use evidence from these texts to answer questions, make inferences and present persuasive arguments \n■ Emphasize literacy across all subjects, not just English \n■ Test writing at every grade level \nNew mathematics assessments: \n■ Go beyond multiple-choice questions and present students with multi-step problems, conceptual questions and real-world applications \n■ Ask students to not only get answers correct, but also explain how they arrived at those answers \n■ Cover fewer topics in greater depth, focusing on the most critical areas \nBenefits of New Assessments \nCollege-readiness defined \nStudents who perform at the college-ready level in English language arts/literacy demonstrate reading, writing, listening and research skills necessary for introductory courses in a variety of disciplines. They also demonstrate subject-area knowledge and skills associated with readiness for entry-level, transferable, credit-bearing English and composition courses. \nStudents who perform atthe college-ready level in mathematics demonstrate foundational mathematical knowledge and quantitative reasoning skills necessary for introductory courses in","cbCaimsZ7f0UZYpf","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimsZ7f0UZYpf","pdf",956386,"English","en",105,"# Why New Assessments?\n## What is different about the new summative assessments?\n# Benefits of New Assessments\n## College-readiness defined\n# Sample Questions\n## Fifth-Grade Mathematics","[{\"question\":\"What are Idaho’s new summative assessments designed to measure?\",\"answer\":\"They judge student progress toward mastering state standards and evaluate program and school effectiveness through end-of-year performance.\"},{\"question\":\"How do the new English language arts assessments differ?\",\"answer\":\"They require students to read more complex texts, use evidence to answer questions, make inferences, present arguments, emphasize literacy across subjects, and include writing at every grade level.\"},{\"question\":\"What does “computer-adaptive assessments” mean for students?\",\"answer\":\"The test adjusts question difficulty based on responses, providing a more engaging and time-efficient experience and producing more accurate results than traditional methods, including for low- or high-achieving students.\"}]","Parents’ Guide to Assessments in Idaho - Overview and Sample Questions | PDF",1791065041,25,{"code":4,"msg":81,"data":82},"ok",{"site_id":74,"language":73,"slug":83,"title":65,"keywords":84,"description":66,"schema_data":85,"social_meta":139,"head_meta":141,"extra_data":143,"updated_unix":144},"parents-guide-to-assessments-in-idaho-overview-and-sample-questions","",{"@graph":86,"@context":138},[87,101,121],{"@type":88,"itemListElement":89},"BreadcrumbList",[90,94,96,99],{"item":91,"name":92,"@type":93,"position":8},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":95,"name":9,"@type":93,"position":14},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/",{"item":97,"name":20,"@type":93,"position":98},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/exam/",3,{"item":100,"name":65,"@type":93,"position":19},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/parents-guide-to-assessments-in-idaho-overview-and-sample-questions/504205/",{"url":100,"name":65,"@type":102,"image":103,"author":108,"headline":65,"publisher":110,"fileFormat":113,"inLanguage":73,"description":66,"dateModified":114,"datePublished":115,"encodingFormat":113,"isAccessibleForFree":116,"interactionStatistic":117},"DigitalDocument",{"url":104,"@type":105,"width":106,"height":107},"https://docshare.wps.com/thumbnails/parents-guide-to-assessments-in-idaho-overview-and-sample-questions/504205.png","ImageObject",300,407,{"name":63,"@type":109},"Person",{"url":91,"name":111,"@type":112},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-10-12","2026-10-03",true,{"@type":118,"interactionType":119,"userInteractionCount":24},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":120},"ViewAction",{"@type":122,"mainEntity":123},"FAQPage",[124,130,134],{"name":125,"@type":126,"acceptedAnswer":127},"What are Idaho’s new summative assessments designed to measure?","Question",{"text":128,"@type":129},"They judge student progress toward mastering state standards and evaluate program and school effectiveness through end-of-year performance.","Answer",{"name":131,"@type":126,"acceptedAnswer":132},"How do the new English language arts assessments differ?",{"text":133,"@type":129},"They require students to read more complex texts, use evidence to answer questions, make inferences, present arguments, emphasize literacy across subjects, and include writing at every grade level.",{"name":135,"@type":126,"acceptedAnswer":136},"What does “computer-adaptive assessments” mean for students?",{"text":137,"@type":129},"The test adjusts question difficulty based on responses, providing a more engaging and time-efficient experience and producing more accurate results than traditional methods, including for low- or high-achieving students.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":100,"og:type":140,"og:title":65,"og:site_name":111,"og:description":66},"article",{"robots":142,"canonical":100},"index,follow",{"doc_id":61,"site_id":74},1791118623]
