The text describes the parasite’s classification as threadlike nematodes and its ability to infect multiple mammals, including humans, dogs, and cats. It details the suction cup mouth, teeth or cutting blades, chemical effects that prevent blood clotting, and the life-cycle stages from egg to larva to adult, emphasizing long-term survival as a sucks itshost's blood, sometimes for several years. Some peo-ple die because of the hookworm. \nHookworms belong to the group of threadlikeworms called nematodes,or roundworms. The para-site attacks several kinds of mammals, includinghumans, dogs, and cats. \n# Suction Cup Mouth\n\nInside the small intestine, the adult hookworm usesits specially designed mouth to feed on its host'sblood.Working like a suction cup,the mouth attach-es to the wall of the small intestine. The mouth con-tains either teeth or cutting blades, depending on thetype of hookworm. As the hookworm sucks the intes-tinal wall into its mouth, these sharp edges tear openthe host's blood vessels. \nHookworms use their sharp, bladelike teeth (below)and suctioncup mouth (left)to attach to thehost's small intestine and suckblood. \nA hookworm egg(top)willhatch into a larva(below)before developing into anadult (center). \nThe parasite releaseschemicals that stop the \nhost's blood from clotting. Then the hookwormsucks up the blood like a vacuum cleaner. It feedsfor a while at one spot on the intestinal wall, thenmoves to a new location. \n# A Permanent Guest\n\nOnce a hookworm invades its host's small intes-tine,it will live there for the rest of its life. This isusually one to five years, but it can be longer. \nMale and female hookworms mate inside \nthe small intestine.A female hookworm begins \nlaying eggs about two months after it enters the \nhost","cbCaisiGTY5K6a26","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaisiGTY5K6a26","pdf",2117540,38,"English","# Chapter One\n## A Bloodsucking Parasite\n## Suction Cup Mouth\n## A
