Define and discuss what is literature. OR \nWhat difference do you find between General literature and The literature?(SU-2018) \nAns. It is certainly the most difficult task to define literature. Literature is a matter to be felt or to be recognised. As Rees says that one can recognise a dog but it cannot be defined. In the same way, Literature is a matter that can be recognised. At the outset it can be said that whatever is written in letter can be called literature. For e.g. a telephone directory, catalogue etc. If take another view then literature isan activity that reflects life. W. H. Hudson says: \"Literature is an expression of life through the medium of language.\" \nR.J. Rees defines : \n\"Literature is writing, which expresses and communicates thoughts, feelings and attitudes towards life. \" \nThese two definitions clear the very concept of literature that literature is a peculiar kind of creation expressed through letters reflecting some concrete ideas or feeling about life. It also explains as to how the world should be and how the human being should behave in this world. It means literature is a creation of the author or the poet centring at life. This kind of literature is categorised into two kinds by De-Quiencey i.e. Literature of knowledge which is like Time Table, Catalogue etc. Another one is literature of power that deals with life and human values. \nRees also divides literature into two kinds. First is whatever written in letter such as catalogue, travel brochures etc. It is knowledge based literature that provides only information and fact. Second is that writing that directly appeals to our heart and soul. Such kind of literature is based on emotions, feelings, values, ethics, etc. It is serious in tone and it has a sound message to convey to the society. For e.g. works of Shakespeare. \nRees gives two examples to clarify his concept of literature. He has taken two pieces of writing about London. The first one is taken from a popular encyclopaedia and the other is from Wordsworth's famous poem 'Upon Westminster Bridge'. The first part i.e. a prose provides factual details of London without any emotional touch. It is an informative part only. While the poetry of \nWordsworth has spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings, emotions, beauty as well as pleasure. It is a kind of literature that uplifts our imagination. It directly appeals to our emotions, feelings etc. Such literature always contains a deeper sense and multiplicity of meanings as well. \nIt means the books based on knowledge or information like a directly or dictionary don't have permanent or universal values. They keep on changing with the time. This kind of literature does have ideas, thoughts and attitudes but they are dynamic. On the other hand, the literature that carries the concept of permanence has universal appeal. It appeals forever, for ages to come. It has a philosophical truth or metaphysical conceits. Its appeal is everlasting and sublime all the time. \nImmortality is a special feature of literature. The writer when creates his work, always hopes that is will last long for ages to come. Thus, he will carefully select his ideas. While the journalist or the advertisement writer writes, but they are just concerned with the present time. Thus their writing is temporary and knowledgeoriented for the time being only. The best example of universality in literature is given by Rees is the Roman poet Catallus's poetry which is a little but effective poem on the death of a sparrow. \nSeriousness and creativity are the outstanding characteristics of literature. The writer always expresses his thoughts according to the law of probability. He is always serious while expressing human joys, sorrows, hopes, aspirations, \ninspirations, virtues and vices etc. The writer is serious because he knows his creation will affect to the human life. One can see all virtues and views expressed seriously and caref","cbCaimRYwif4bOCM","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaimRYwif4bOCM","pdf",446513,23,"English","# Chapter-1 : Why we study literature\n## Q.1 Define and discuss what is literature\n## Q.2 Explain the concept of 'Good Literature'","[{\"question\":\"How is literature defined in the chapter?\",\"answer\":\"Literature is described as writing that expresses and communicates thoughts, feelings, and attitudes toward life, and as an expression of life through language.\"},{\"question\":\"What difference does the chapter mention between knowledge-based and emotional literature?\",\"answer\":\"Knowledge-based literature provides information and facts, while emotionally driven literature appeals to the heart and soul through emotions, feelings, values, ethics, and serious tone.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is good literature considered to have universal and permanent appeal?\",\"answer\":\"Good literature is said to carry permanence and universal appeal, often reflecting philosophical truths that can last for ages, unlike temporary, present-focused knowledge writing.\"}]","Paper 7 ktl - Chapter 1 - Why We Study Literature | PDF",1789944555,58]
