The story highlights the city’s renowned muslin textile tradition, thin fabric, and thriving merchant community. It explains the quiet present—52 ruined mansions—through fire rumors and long-term conflict, calling it the “Ghost City.”","Panam City HerStory Foundation \nSayeef Mahmud \n”Mira, do you know there is a ghost capital in Bangladesh?” asked Nahian. \n”Don’t be silly, Dhaka is the capital of Bangladesh,” replied Mira . \n”Today it is. But it was not always this way. In the 15 00 ’s, Bengal was divided into many independent states. Panam City was the capital of the kingdom of courageous Isa Khan, one of the last of the Baro-Bhuyan landlords. But after Isa Khan died, the \nMughals took over the land.” \n“Is it the ghost of Isa Khan that haunts Panam City?” asked Mira . \n”He, among many others! The city had many rulers. After the Mughals, the British East India Company took over and set up their textile offices here .” \n“So, Dhaka has a long history of textiles!” Mira was shocked to learn that the textile trade has so much history. \n“Oh yes, Bengal was famous for a fine fabric \ncalled muslin. It was so thin that a six-yardsari could be folded and passed through a finger ring. Panam Nagar was home to the best muslin weavers and many merchants moved here and built fantastic mansions. Atthe peak of its glory, the city had close to 14 00 families.” \n“Oh wow, it must have been a great place to live back then!” Mira imagined the bustling city. \n”It was . There were grand balls, festivals, and celebrations. But if you visit Panam City today, it is quiet and still. You will find only one street that is lined with 52 broken mansions. These houses were once grand palaces, but today they are empty and falling apart. Only dogs and trees live in Panam today. ” \n6 \n“Oh wow! What happened? Did the ghosts drive everybody out?” Mira loved a good scary story. \n”Some say that there was a fire . Others say that when the British Raj fell apart, the people of the area started fighting. For hundreds of years, the Hindus and Muslims had lived together, but they stopped sharing the land, things fell apart, and people moved out. This is why today many people call it the Ghost \nCity.” \n“Oh dear, that sounds sad more than scary,”said Mira . \n”It’s true. But visiting Panam feels like time travel. In Dhaka everything is new, and the buildings are tall. But in Panam Nagar, everything feels frozen in time,” replied Nahian.","cbCais9rNsZE6h1i","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCais9rNsZE6h1i","pdf",2515028,12,"English","en",105,"# Panam City’s Past\n## Isa Khan and the Mughals\n## British Textile Offices\n## Muslin Weavers and Merchants\n## Rise and Decline of the Mansions\n## Why It’s Called the Ghost City","[{\"question\":\"Where is Panam City’s story set, and how does it contrast with Dhaka?\",\"answer\":\"The dialogue contrasts modern Dhaka with Panam City, describing Dhaka as new and tall while Panam feels frozen in time and quiet.\"},{\"question\":\"What role did Isa Khan and the Mughals play in Panam City?\",\"answer\":\"Panam City is described as the capital of Isa Khan’s kingdom; after his death, the Mughals took over the land.\"},{\"question\":\"Why is Panam City called the “Ghost City”?\",\"answer\":\"Rumors mention a fire and later fighting after the British Raj fell apart; Hindus and Muslims stopped sharing the land, leading many people to move out and leaving only broken mansions behind.\"}]",1783584371,18,{"code":4,"msg":29,"data":30},"ok",{"site_id":23,"language":22,"slug":31,"title":13,"keywords":32,"description":14,"schema_data":33,"social_meta":85,"head_meta":87,"extra_data":89,"updated_unix":26},"panam-city-herstory","",{"@graph":34,"@context":84},[35,52,67],{"@type":36,"itemListElement":37},"BreadcrumbList",[38,42,46,49],{"item":39,"name":40,"@type":41,"position":11},"https://docshare.wps.com","Home","ListItem",{"item":43,"name":44,"@type":41,"position":45},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/","Document",2,{"item":47,"name":12,"@type":41,"position":48},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/story-novel/",3,{"item":50,"name":13,"@type":41,"position":51},"https://docshare.wps.com/document/panam-city-herstory/50716/",4,{"url":50,"name":13,"@type":53,"author":54,"headline":13,"publisher":56,"fileFormat":59,"inLanguage":22,"description":14,"dateModified":60,"datePublished":61,"encodingFormat":59,"isAccessibleForFree":62,"interactionStatistic":63},"DigitalDocument",{"name":9,"@type":55},"Person",{"url":39,"name":57,"@type":58},"DocShare","Organization","application/pdf","2026-07-13","2026-07-09",true,{"@type":64,"interactionType":65,"userInteractionCount":11},"InteractionCounter",{"@type":66},"ViewAction",{"@type":68,"mainEntity":69},"FAQPage",[70,76,80],{"name":71,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":73},"Where is Panam City’s story set, and how does it contrast with Dhaka?","Question",{"text":74,"@type":75},"The dialogue contrasts modern Dhaka with Panam City, describing Dhaka as new and tall while Panam feels frozen in time and quiet.","Answer",{"name":77,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":78},"What role did Isa Khan and the Mughals play in Panam City?",{"text":79,"@type":75},"Panam City is described as the capital of Isa Khan’s kingdom; after his death, the Mughals took over the land.",{"name":81,"@type":72,"acceptedAnswer":82},"Why is Panam City called the “Ghost City”?",{"text":83,"@type":75},"Rumors mention a fire and later fighting after the British Raj fell apart; Hindus and Muslims stopped sharing the land, leading many people to move out and leaving only broken mansions behind.","https://schema.org",{"og:url":50,"og:type":86,"og:title":13,"og:site_name":57,"og:description":14},"article",{"robots":88,"canonical":50},"index,follow",{"doc_id":7,"site_id":23},{"code":4,"msg":5,"data":91},[92,95,99,103,108,113,118,123,128,131,135],{"id":11,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":12,"show_sort_weight":93,"slug":94},90,"story-novel",{"id":45,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":96,"show_sort_weight":97,"slug":98},"Literature",80,"literature",{"id":51,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":100,"show_sort_weight":101,"slug":102},"Exam",70,"exam",{"id":104,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":105,"show_sort_weight":106,"slug":107},5,"Comic",60,"comic",{"id":109,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":110,"show_sort_weight":111,"slug":112},6,"Technology",50,"technology",{"id":114,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":115,"show_sort_weight":116,"slug":117},7,"Healthcare",40,"healthcare",{"id":119,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":120,"show_sort_weight":121,"slug":122},8,"Research & Report",30,"research-report",{"id":124,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":125,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":127},9,"Religion & Spirituality",20,"religion-spirituality",{"id":126,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":129,"show_sort_weight":126,"slug":130},"World Cup","world-cup",{"id":132,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":133,"show_sort_weight":132,"slug":134},10,"Lifestyle","lifestyle",{"id":136,"doc_module":4,"doc_module_name":44,"category_name":137,"show_sort_weight":104,"slug":138},19,"General","general"]
