Cohen’s Palestine and the Great Powers, 1945–1948 as an historical analysis of British, American, and Zionist perceptions and policies during the end of the Mandate and the 1948 conflict. The review praises methodological clarity and balanced, well-documented conclusions while noting flaws, excessive or weak excursuses, and issues in coverage of Palestinian perspectives. It situates related works, including Abu Lughod’s Palestinian Rights, to frame a shared theme of affirmation and denial.","and Appendix 2 offers a translation of six selected documents useful to a better under-standing of the problem and also an excellent sampler for readers not yet acquainted withGeniza literature. The volume is completed by a bibliography,an index of Geniza texts, and a general index. \nThe organization of the volume is excellent;though one might have found a moresuitable place for the information in the appendices after Chapter 3.Readers will appre-ciate greatly the clarity with which customs, institutions, relgious practices,Jewish rituallaw, and the several other esoteric topics are presented by the author. While the examina-tion of the sources is exhaustive and meticulous, the evidence derived from them is usedwith prudence with few assumptions. The judgements are balanced, the conclusions arefair, with all main points well-documented and convincing. There are some excursusesthat seem to add little that is relevant to the topic;for instance, the one on the title ofMuqaddam(pp.202-04).Some of the documentation, easily accessible elsewhere, isexcessive. Some mispellings will cause surprise. \nTo complete his research Cohen took upon himself the enormous task of examining thewhole Geniza corpus;for this he deserves our gratitude. In Geniza studies S.D.Goiteinhas set a standard of scholarship seldom achieved;this is reflected in the excellence of thecontributions that his school continues to make.Mark Cohen's book has great merits andit well represents recent Geniza scholarship. \nSaint Michael's College of Vermont \nARMAND 0.CITARELLA \nMICHAELJ.COHEN,Palestine and the Great Powers,1945-1948(Princeton,N.J.:Prince-ton University throughout the summer of 1982,the three items under review should cause sober reflection on the past and grave appre-hension about the present and future. The theme linking them together could well be thesubtitle of the Abu Lughod volume,*affirmation and denial’;affirmation, however,in thesense that Cohen demonstrates,of irredentist Zionist natonalism and the converse denialof a legitimate Palestinian response. \nCohen is senior lecturer at the Bar Ilan University. The present volume is a sequel to hisearlier account of the British retreat from the Mandate from 1936-1945.The sequel is astory chiefly of personalities and policies;British,American, and Zionist. The authorrecounts,in great detail, the extent to which the problem of Palestine centered aroundeach side's perception of its own individual dilemma in the drama:for the British,it wasfinding a solution to which the Arab states would agree;for the Americans,it was weigh-ing the advantages of Jewish support for the Democrats at home against wider Americannational interests in the Middle East;and for the Zionists,it was judging which tacticswere appropriate,at a given moment,to ensure achievement of their ultimate goal,sover-eignty over allof Palestine. Moreover,Cohen shows that the ultimate decisions resolvingthese separate dilemmas were made on the basis solely of realpolitik. Each side, therefore, seemed to share one thing in common,a virtually total denial that Palestinian Arabspossessed either a natural concern for their fate or a legitimate grievance against a policyimposed upon them from without. The conflict would inevitably be solved by force, and \nCohen cites a number of factors which,in 1948,gave the Zionists an advantage:an effec-tive Jewish lobby in Washington, indirect Soviet military aid,a favorable age-profile ofthe Yishuv and a demoralized and disorganized Palestinian opposition.Cohen illustratesthe paramount role of realpolitik in his assessment of Ben Gurion's position at the
