It discusses the Oxford English Dictionary definition of “haiku,” contrasts it with related dictionary entries, and humorously imagines how a haiku might help in a hail shower. The introduction argues that the haiku’s structure becomes a fitting lens for character and place-based identity. business our readersand our planet. This book is made from ForestStewardship Council°certifhed paper. \n# An Introduction\n\nI have been asked to write AT LEAST five hundred words(MINIMUM)as a way ofintroducing this book,my book,of haikus concerning the British psyche or,in a way, thepsyche of those residents that make up England,Wales,Scotland and Northern Ireland aka Britain or sometimesGreat Britain or even the United Kingdom. And I haveagreed to do this.Completely agreed.Without argument. \nThe Oxford English Dictionary defines a ^haiku'as ‘a Japa-nese poem of seventeen syllables,in three lines of five, sevenand five'.In the dictionary,it is next to the word 'haik’(alarge outer wrap worn by people from North Africa',andhail'(pellets of frozen rain fallingin showers from cumulo-nimbus clouds').Three things which,I think you wouldhave to agree, differ from each other greatly. \nWhile a haik would probably come in quite handy if youwere caught in a hail shower,a haiku probably wouldn't bethat helpful.Unless it was a haiku of your own devisingwhich(using seventeen syllables in three lines of five, sevenand five)reminded you of what to do in a hail shower or,alternatively, where you could buy a nice haik. \nWow.Not even halfway yet. That's surprising.Very, very, very surprising. \nSo what is it about theseJapanese poems of seventeen syl-lables,in three lines offive, seven and five thatis so effectivein illustrating the psyche of those residents that make upEngland,Wales,Scotland and Northern Ireland aka Brit-ain or sometimes Great Britain or even the United King-dom?That is an excellent question.A really, really excellentquestion. \nFor what is an Englishman?Or,for that matter,an Eng-lish woman?Let alone a Welshman,Scotsman or NorthernIrishman as wellas a Welsh woman,Scots woman or North-ern Irish lady?Well,to put it quite, quite simply, they are aresident, who happens to live in one of those four locations. And then there's the Channel Islands.Plus Gibraltar.Andany number of overseas territories. \nAnd thus, this makes them the perfect candidate forhaiku which,as you will recall,is aJapanese poem of seven-teen syllables,in three lines of five, seven and five as so per-fectly defined by the Oxford English Dictionary, which printedits first edition,in Oxford, all the way back in 1884,whenthings such as Penny Farthings, large moustaches, choleraand hooped skirts were very popular. \nAnd so,finally,in conclusion, what you hold, right now,in your hand or hands,is a joining together,or a combin-ing if you will,or possibly a mixing,of these two fascinat-ing occurrences. The classical form of theJapanese haiku(apoem of seventeen syllables,in three lines of five, seven andfive)with the psyche,or character,of those residents,resid-ing in England,Wales,Scotland and Norchern Ireland plusany overseas territories. \nI really hope you enjoy it.Really, really, really enjoy it.","cbCaikEoxaPbowlI","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaikEoxaPbowlI","pdf",2445306,152,"English","# An Introduction","[{\"question\":\"What purpose does the introduction say the book
