The process takes place automatically for students within the school day and over the course of the school year. Program eligibility is based on the student’s performance across multiple criteria measures (MCM) . To qualify, students must score within the top 20% of his/her grade level. Parents are notified of GATE placement in mid-June.
Once a student is placed in the GATE program , this remains a part of the student’s record until graduation. Students will stay in the GATE cluster program through the end of 6th grade. All students will have the opportunity to participate in advanced learning at the middle and high school levels per each school’s program and placement policy. Students do not need to be GATE identified to take part in advanced learning in middle school and high school.

| 3rd Grade MCM | | | |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| To qualify for program placement, a student must meet criteria in 3 of 4 categories | | | |
| ABILITY CATEGORY | READING ACHIEVEMENT CATEGORY
Must meet 1 of criteria
measures | MATH ACHIEVEMENT CATEGORY
Must meet 1 of criteria
measures | CREATIVITY CATEGORY |
| Naglieri (NNAT)
OLSAT SAI (optional) | STAR Reading Fall
STAR Reading Winter | STAR Math Fall
STAR Math Winter | Writing Score |

| 4th-5th Grade MCM | | |
| --- | --- | --- |
| To qualify for program placement, a student must meet criteria in 2 of 3 categories. | | |
| ACHIEVEMENT / ABILITY CATEGORY
Must meet 1 of criteria
measures | READING ACHIEVEMENT CATEGORY
Must meet 1 of criteria measures | MATH ACHIEVEMENT CATEGORY
Must meet 1 of criteria measures |
| GPA Tri 1
GPA Tri 2
OLSAT SAI (optional) | CAASPP ELA
STAR Reading Fall
STAR Reading Winter | CAASPP Math
STAR Math Fall
STAR Math Winter |

Description of Criteria
Grade Point Average (GPA)
The student’s grades in the four major content areas (English , Math , Science and Social Science) are translated to a standard 4 point scale and then an average is calculated.
Naglieri (NNAT)
This non-verbal , culturally neutral test assesses general ability. It is a nationally normed , multiple choice test that is administered to all students one time in third grade. NAI , Naglieri Ability Index , scores between 90 and 110 are considered to be average. Scores between 111 and 120 are considered high average. Scores between 121 and 130 are considered to be superior. Scores of 131 and above are considered to be very superior.
Otis Lennon School Ability Test (OLSAT)
This nationally normed , multiple-choice test is an optional , fee-based test offered to current IUSD students. If administered by IUSD , it can be considered as one measure of achievement. Families can register for the test on our website annually. The OLSAT measures a student's verbal , nonverbal , and quantitative abilities that relate to a student's academic success in school. The average SAI score is 100. The maximum SAI score is 150.
STAR Reading and Math
STAR Renaissance assessments are nationally normed , computer-adaptive tests of reading and math achievement. Several times each year all students in grades 1-5 participate in the STAR Math assessment , and students in grades 3-8 participate in STAR Reading. Scale scores range from 600 to 1400 and are calculated based on the difficulty of questions presented to a student and the number of correct responses they provide. The highest score of the Fall and Winter administrations for each subject area are used as criteria measures.
Creative Writing Sample
Students are asked to write a creative story in response to a specific prompt.
