wearing a bright orange knitted pumpkinhat,a dark Kelly green stem protruding from the top, leaf included. She is a sixty plus year old eccentric, straight off the vine it seems.Small, frail, balding and bony;Emily Pritkin, the most spirited andcomplex character to ever walk into the class, deserves the nicknameI have chosen for her,Miss Fire. \nWe all know she is battling some form of cancer. Her knobby greyhair peeks out from various places beneath her pumpkin. The bagshe carries is a Dooney and Burke creation;it is huge, big enough tocarry a two-drawer filing cabinet.Emily disappears under a mass oflight tan leather with a duck stamped into it.The duck waddles a bitas she roots through her storage facility and emerges triumphant witha spiral notebook, digital voice recorder and a fountain pen.Otherstudents are busy bumming pens and bits of paper from each other;Emily is upright, attentive and rearing to go. \n\"Do you mind if I leave my hat on?\"Emily points to her pumpkinknowing she has caught my attention,\"My head gets cold because Iam still mostly bald.\"The upper class English accent blows me outof the water. It doesn't fit the stereotypical Manhattan Upper WestSide accent I was expecting.\"No,not at all,\"I say, painfully awarethat my Galway accent is slightly more pronounced and bog like.\"You're Irish,\"she states, and displays the graying but perfectlystraight teeth with a broad smile,“How lovely!” \nEmily,elbows on table, hands entwined and chin resting on top ofthem, awaits my lecture with wide-eyed enthusiasm. She is the onlyone attentive right now. \n“When you step through that door you've entered a benevolentdictatorship.” \nThe rest of the class is now looking at me wide-eyed,but it is notenthusiasm,it's more of 'Who da fuck are you?\" \n3 \n“Welcome to journalism. If you want to learn and get the B plus, listen up and do things my way.It will all be good.” \n“Whaddya mean B plus?” \n“Good question, thanks for asking it.No one gets an A,no one.” \nThe kid with the curly blonde hair and fifties retro glasses starts tomouth off.I continue to speak over him, better to nip this sort ofbehavior in the bud. \n\"Journalism is an art,not a science.\" \nI start into my usual rhetoric;I know this kid is going to be trouble.Emily nods her head, seemingly in agreement with me,she's theonly one nodding right now,and remembers she forgot to turn on herdigital voice recorder. The others watch her with growing interest asshe fidgets with the small device. \n\"Yes,I know,\"she states matter of factly,\"I am the oldest one inhere, and I absolutely love it,by the way!” \nHer smile is drawing more attention than her baldness or the \npumpkin on her head.No one else is smiling;not me,not the otherstudents. \n\"Let's get started here.\"I rummage through my LL Bean canvas toteuntil I find the cards. She gets the leather duck on her bag;I get the \n$4.95 embroidered initials S.C. \n“Everybody take one.” \nI distribute the 3 by 5 multicolored index cards around all the tables. \n\"Tell me who you are,why you are here, what your educationalbackground is and what you hope to get from this journalism class.\" \nAfter giving the students the outline for the class and telling themwhat the class text is,our time is up.The last voice I hear as the doorcloses is an upper class English accent. \n“Thanks so much Ms.Cleary.See you on Thursday.” \nThe pink index card said; \nName:Emily Pritkin \nAge:63 \nEducation:Oxford University;English Literature,1969 \n## Why I am here and what I hope to gain:\n\nI am here because my breast cancer
