One of my goals was not to impress my readers, or bore them for that matter, with an “I Love Me”book about endless heroics and law enforcement stories. My intention is not to convince the reader of anything, and I have no particular agenda. I mean simply to share my stories. True, throughout my career I have done my share of those things, as it is quite difficult to serve as a field agent for twenty years on the U.S./Mexico border and not get into a real spot or two. However, for legal reasons I cannot share the majority of those stories. Instead, I wish to give some insight into the world of the Border Patrol agent and demonstrate how vastly different it is from other law enforcement agencies worldwide. Picture it like a very dark version of Alice in Wonderland, if you will, because for ten to twelve hours each day my fellow agents and I stepped into some kind of parallel universe entirely incompatible with the world in which we spent the other twelve.  \nMany people honestly believe they understand the Border Patrol agent’s world, but I can assure you, unless they have been agents, they do not.  \nThere is no real understanding of that world without plunging deeply into it on a full-time basis; and I am not talking about going on a three-or fourhour border tour that some politicians brag about, either. Politicians love to fly over the border in a helicopter or take a drive along the fence in a convoy of vehicles for protection and then proudly proclaim,“I’ve been down in the trenches with those guys, and I know what it’s like down there.” Truth is, they have been nowhere near the real action, and they know nothing about what it is truly like down there.
