It introduces nutrients as invisible substances that provide energy, strength, and disease protection, emphasizing why nutrition matters for survival. The content then breaks nutrients into five main types—carbohydrates, protein, fats, vitamins and minerals, and water—using familiar food examples such as cassava, yams, potatoes, rice, bread, and plant-based staples to connect learning to daily meals.","Our Food, \nOur Bodies \nEnglish Health \nCopyright © 2014, American University of Nigeria \n[http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/](http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) \nYou are free to make commercial use of this work. All people have to eat to grow and survive. \nMost of our food comes from the farm, from plants or animals. \nThere are many different kinds of food. They each help our bodies in different ways. \n“Nutrients” are the substances in food that give our bodies energy, strength, and protection against diseases. \nWe can’t see nutrients; they are too small. \nBut they are still important because they make the difference between life and death. \nLet’s look at five main types of nutrients. They are: \n1) Carbohydrates \n2) Protein \n3) Fats \n4) Vitamins and Minerals, and \n5) Water \nCarbohydrates: \nJust like their big name, carbohydrates play a big role in our lives. They give our bodies energy to work and play. \nCarbohydrates are to our bodies like fuel is to a car. \nWithout carbohydrates we would be too weak to get out of bedin the morning! \nWe get carbohydrates mostly from plants. For example, cassava, yams, potatoes, plantains, maize, rice, and bread are full of carbohydrates. \nMany of us like to eat “fufu” made from cassava, plantains, or grain at every meal. We dip it in a tasty sauce or stew.","cbCaibx8oVcTPM9H","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaibx8oVcTPM9H","pdf",863735,4,1,23,"English","en",105,"# Food and nutrients\n## Five main types of nutrients\n### Carbohydrates","[{\"question\":\"What are nutrients, and why are they important?\",\"answer\":\"Nutrients are substances in food that give the body energy, strength, and protection against diseases.
