Each volume presents the contemporary responses to a particular writer, enabling the student to follow the formation of critical attitudes to the writer’s work and its place within a literary tradition. \nThe carefully selected sources range from landmark essays in the history of criticism to fragments of contemporary opinion and little published documentary material, such as letters and diaries. \nSignificant pieces of criticism from later periods are also included in order to demonstrate fluctuations in reputation following the writer’s death. \nOSCAR WILDE \nTHE CRITICAL HERITAGE \nEdited by \nKARL BECKSON \nLondon and New York \nFirst Published in 1974 \nThis edition published in the Taylor & Francis e-Library, 2005. \n“To purchase your own copy of this or any of Taylor & Francis or Routledge’s collection of thousands of eBooks please \n[go to www.eBookstore.tandf.co.uk](go to www.eBookstore.tandf.co.uk).” \nCompilation. introduction, notes and index © 1974 Watson G.Branch \nAll rights reserved. On one side we learn a great deal about the state of criticism at large and in particular about the development of critical attitudes towards a single writer; at the same time, through private comments in letters, journals or marginalia, we gain an insight upon the tastes and literary thought of individual readers of the period. Evidence of this kind helps us to understand the writer’s historical situation, the nature of his immediate reading-public, and his response to these pressures. \nThe separate volumes in the Critical Heritage Series present a record of this early criticism. Clearly for many of the highly productive and lengthily reviewed nineteenth-and twentieth-century writers there existsan enormous body of material; and in these cases the volume editors have made a selection of the most important views, significant for their intrinsic critical worth or for their representative quality—perhaps even registering incomprehension! \nFor earlier writers, notably pre-eighteenth century, the materials are much scarcer and the historical period has been extended, sometimes far beyond the writer’s lifetime, in order to show the inception and growth of critical views which were initially slow to appear. \nIn each volume the documents are headed by an Introduction, discussing the material assembled and relating the early stages of the author’s reception to what we have come to identify as the critical tradition. The volumes will make available much material which would otherwise be difficult of access and it is hoped that the modern reader will be thereby helped towards an informed understanding of the ways in which literature has been read and judged. \nB.C.S. \nContents \nGENERAL EDITOR’S PREFACE v \nACKNOWLEDGMENTS xii \nPREFACE xiii \nINTRODUCTION 1 \nPoems (1881) \n1 Review in Athenaeum, 1881 25 \n2 Review in Saturday Review, 1881 29 \n3 OSCAR BROWNING, in Academy, 1881 31 \n4 Review in Dial, 1881 33 \n5 Review in Spectator, 1881 35 \n6 WALTER HAMILTON, Wilde’s ‘aesthetic poetry’, 1882 39 \n7 T.W.HIGGINSON, Wilde’s ‘unmanly’ poetry, 1882 41 \n8 AMBROSE BIERCE, Wilde as ‘sovereign of insufferab","cbCaihOC8bBhd3Md","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaihOC8bBhd3Md","pdf",1759861,454,"English","# General Editor’s Preface\n## Reception and critical tradition\n# Contents\n## Poems (1881)\n## Vera; or the Nihilists (1883)\n## The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888)\n## The Picture of Dorian Gray (1890) (first version)\n## The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891) (second version)\n## The Duchess of Padua (1891)\n## Intentions (1891)\n## Lord Arthur Savile’s Crime and Other Stories (1891)\n## A House of Pomegranates (1891)\n## Lady Windermere’s Fan (1892)\n## Salomé (1893)","[{\"question\":\"What does The Critical Heritage series aim to provide to students of literature?\",\"answer\":\"It collects contemporary responses to major literary figures, helping readers trace the formation of critical attitudes and how the writer’s work is situated within a literary tradition.\"},{\"question\":\"What kinds of sources are included in this volume on Oscar Wilde?\",\"answer\":\"The selection includes landmark essays from criticism history, fragments of contemporary opinion, and little-published documentary material such as letters and diaries.\"},{\"question\":\"How does the volume address changes in Wilde’s reputation after his death?\",\"answer\":\"It incorporates significant pieces from later periods to demonstrate fluctuations in his reputation following his death.\"}]","Oscar Wilde - The Critical Heritage | PDF",1789975629,699]
