The Osborne and LevyCollections of Children's Literature\n\nEllen E.Embardo \nn the 1920s,Edgar Osborne, county li-brarian of Derbyshire,England, and hiswife Mabel began collecting English child-ren's books that had delighted them aschildren. As their interest grew,so grewtheir collection. In 1934 Mr.Osbornevisited the Toronto Public Library'sBoys and Girls House and was greatly im-pressed with the work of Lillian H.Smithand her predecessors in establishing a na-tional center for the study of children'sliterature.Later, recognizing the difficul-ty of recreating in Canada a collectionsuch as the one he and his wife hadamassed,Edgar,in memory of Mabel, gave his 2,000 children's books to theBoys and Girls House. The Osborne col-lection served as a core for one of today'sgreatest collections of children's literature. \nSoon afterward in the 1950s,on this sideof the Atlantic,Billie M.Levy of WestHartford,Connecticut, began readingbooks to her young children. To her de-light,she found that her own enjoymentof the books, and particularly the illustra-tions,rivaled that of her young listeners.Especially fascinated by similaritiesamong the illustrators,Billie Levy begana twenty-five year collecting effort ofAmerican children's book illustrators andthe artists who influenced them. \nIn recent years, representative works ofthe Osborne and Levy collections havecome together in the Special CollectionsDepartment of the Homer Babbidge Li-brary at the University of Connecticut.Feenie Ziner and Francelia Butler, bothon the English Department faculty, havedonated the 1981 Holp Shuppanfacsimile reproductions of thirty-fivesignificant English illustrated books hous-ed in the Osborne Collection. And BillieLevy has generously loaned to theLibrary her extensive collection of 5,000illustrated children's books. With thesetwo major acquisitions, the Library hasgreatly enhanced its ability to serve as aresource for the study ofchildren'sliterature, and particularly illustrators ofchildren's books. \nVolume 28 Number 11 November 1986 \nAn illustration from Under the Window by Kate Greenaway,1878. \nThe two collections complement eachother. The Osborne collection representsbooks that were popular in England up to1910,including works written, illustratedand published in England,as well asforeign books adopted and read by Eng-lish children, including translations ofcontinental fairy tales, fables, classics andother stories.Holp Shuppan, the Tokyo-based publisher of the set of facsimilereproductions, selected thirty-five booksfrom the collection to reflect the develop-ment of English illustrated books forchildren,representing-as adequately asthe constraint of thirty-five titles spreadover more than two centuries Amos Comenius'sOrbis Sensualium Pictus, originally pub-lished in 1657 and translated into Englishin 1659.Recognizing the need for child-ren to see objects in order to recall themadequately,Comenius created scores of \ndelightful illustrations to render learningmore palatable to the young. His charm-ing pictures were numbered to accom-pany descriptions in English and Latinof some aspects of the
