\nReport to Senior Electronics Engineers &Managers \nMarch 1973Volume 91,Number 3 \n# OPTICAL DATA PROCESSING\n\nElectrical engineers at Carnegie-Me1lon University havereported progress in developing a new method of processingvisual data that they say wi11 eventually simplifycommunications systems and revolutionize computer hardware. \nThe method, known as optical computing or optical dataprocessing, can refocus pictures and images that have beenblurred by multiple exposures, movement, and poor resolution. The work directed by professor Sing Lee and funded by theNational Science foundation and NASA involves the use oflaser beams, lenses, and a specia1 light filtering element. \nKey to optical computing has been the development of a lightfiltering element called a spatial filter. The filter itselfcan take on many different forms.Crude filters are simplyphotographic films with patterns on them, and more complicatedand sophisticated filters are sometimes electro-optica1crystals or organic dye materials. \nLaser beams are used as monochromatic and coherent lightsources to illuminate the images, and the lenses focus thelaser beams on to the spatial filters.Much of the currentresearch in optical computing at CMU is in the developmentof spatia1 filters that can change form quickly.Lee explains,\"The faster we can change the filter or the faster the filtercan change itself, the faster we can process different images.\" \nAlthough optical computing is sti11 in the developmentalstage, several uses have been found for the new system.Oneuse, described by Lee as \"solid as a rock\"is microwavephotography.By using lasers and optical systems to processthe data received from microwave radars, the Air Force andNASA can photograph the earth through clouds, fog, andother natural interferences. \nLooking into the future, engineers see optical computing asa promising method of simplifying the information sentthrough communications channels. They envision using an \nCopyright1973,by Industrial Research Inc.,222 S.RiversideP1aza,Chicago,I11.60606.Reproduction prohibited withoutpermission. \noptical systems to subtract visual information that is \nchanging from visual information that is constant.By sendingonly the information that is changing and adding it to thevisual image known to be constant,a considerable amountof unnecessary communication can be eliminated. \nAnother area being investigated is the use of optical systemsin medical technology.Doctors and medical techniciansmight someday be able to run images of tissues and ce1lsthrough an optical processor that would identify diseasesand infected areas. \n# SODIUM LAMP\n\nA new,low-wattage,high-pressure sodium lamp, designedespecially for low lighting residential areas, has beendeveloped by Westinghouse engineers. \nThe\"Ceramalux\"sodium lamp is an extremely efficientconcentrated light source which produces over 100 lumensper watt一more than five times as much light as anincandescent lamp and twice as much as mercury vaporSources. \n# QUARK HUNT\n\nThe much-hunted quark—the elusive particle that is a key tomodern theories of the structure of matter—has once againescaped. \nThe negative results of one of the most thorough quark huntsever conducted were reported by Dr.Arnold F.Clark, aphysicist from the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory,Ca1. \nClark stated that since late 1969 his LLL team has soughtpainstakingly but unsuccessfully for signs of a quark amongcloud chamber photographs of about a million cosmic ray tracks. \nQuarks were named in 1964 by physicist Murray Ge11-Mann aspart of a revolutionary, now widely accepted theoreticalsystem for classifying and understanding the elementaryparticles that make up matter.Physicist George Zweigdeveloped a similar system independently at about thesame time. \nIn Gel1-Mann's system, quarks are the fundamental particlesfrom which protons, neutrons, and a11 other heavy particlesare made.Quarks are thus the basic building blocks ofal1 matter. \n# SIGNALS THROUGH GLASS WIRES\n\nGlass wires","cbCaidu1xVk32n6U","https://ap.wps.com/l/cbCaidu1xVk32n6U","pdf",2898823,"English","#
